Evening all

I have today parted company with my exhaust tip. I have a genuine porsche back box but was always baffled as to why it is stainless steel apart from the tip which looked like mild steel and was painted black and I had noted corrosion on it lately. So can I replace this tip or do I need a full back box? The rest of the back box is in good order as you would expect from stainless!!

Stuart

My exhaust tip is stainless, Porsche spec item but not welded to the end box. All my exhaust, pipes etc are stainless, non OP - the end tip is a clamp fit to the end pipe...

My tip was defo mild steel and defo welded to the back box. There is about 2 inches of stainless protruding from the exit of the silencer and then for some crazy reason the non stainless tip is welded on there. It is also defo a genuine porsche back box with the part number attached on a stainless tag on the underside of the silencer box.

So the end tip is an after market item then? Breaker yard perhaps for an original - not normally damaged in an accident!?

No it was supplied by porsche like that! Complete with black painted welded on non stainless tip and was the thick end of 800 quid as well!

I will check the generic 'tip end' price here and let you know...

Hi :)

Aftermarket ones in chrome or stainless usually have two holes at joining end for self tappers....so you wont lose it.... :)

All the best Brett :)

Should have been harder to lose being welded on lol but still managed it! Just really can't fathom the logic in putting a mild steel tip on an otherwise stainless back box. Thought it was weird when I saw it new but I got it old stock brand new for a good price. It has lasted about 4 years I think. I may go to an exhaust fabrication place and get them to sort it. The only issue is I no longer have the stock tip for reference. I'm sure a sensibly sized oval in stainless will do the trick. There is naff all on ebay tho a place in Ardrossan is selling complete back boxes delivered for £129. Must not be stainless. Pretty sure I'll get change out of 50 quid for my earlier suggestion which should work just fine and look the part.

Right all sorted. OPC have chrome tips available. £67 plus vat then obviously need to get it fitted. I got this stainless steel number supplied and fitted for £60 and it is of course stainless steel! Looks fairly stock but I think defo looks better than the black mild steel tip originally supplied.

looks good, so where is that one from?
I was looking at this btw..
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201183138941?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I'm sure it wouldn't look as good as your stainless steel one though..

The exhaust fab guy had it in stock. Was lucky. Offered it up and it looked spot on. It's a 2.5 inch round pipe at the back then the oversize oval exit which is double skinned. Should last a lifetime.
