Post subject:  grub bolt on rear gear linkage
Had the rear gear linkage replaced a couple of months ago. Today the gear lever was getting sloppy side to side, I had a look at front and rear linkages and fong the bolt that links the main selector shaft to the new rear linkage was loose. Tightened it up and it sorted it. My question is, is that all what holds the shaft and linkage together, a small grub bolt pushing in an indent. Doesn't seem very substantially and wouldn't suprise me if it came undone again!

Hi, that small bolt should have a lockwire fitted to prevent it coming loose. Looks like whoever replaced it forgot that step... :?

How do you put lockwire on it? Any pics?

Just looked at pics of lockwire and now realise it passes through a hole in the head. I'll check mine tomorrow to see if it has a hole. I have noticed the is no rubber boot there either, are they normally stil in place after 20years.is it something I can do without or should I get one sorted?

lockwireing isn't intended to maintain torque, it's to make sure parts don't come apart and get lost or cause disconnection. Put some thread lock on the bolt and nip it back up.

Hi, yes - the lockwire passes through the bolt. That new bolt fitted to your linkage probably doesn't have a hole - however, a new bolt would be available from Porsche - 823 711 833 (hexagon-headed-bolt)

It is a good idea to replace the rubber boot 477 711 159B (bellows) as it affords the linkage some protection, they usually stay on but get hardened over time. Again, your OPC will probably be able to get one in for you.

Your rubber bushes on the cross link don't look in very good condition and may be contributing to sideways slop. I fitted JMG's medium short shift with a nice threaded bar and rose joints. Tricky to fit but a lovely engineered solution. Also fitted the stick conversion with proper bearings from the States. Lovely changes now and yes a boot is necessary. I used a bit of loctite (not the heavy duty one) as well as wiring up that little bolt.
I had to drop the transaxle a couple of inches to get at the bolt on the far side and it's still a pain of a job.

I'll have a look at the bolt and if there isnt a hole I'll drill one. Wonder if stainless welding wire is the same a lockwire. I bet that boot is really cheap, not!

To be fair, now I have tighten the bolt there is no sideways play at all. What is the short shifter like, is it worth it considering ive just had a stardard one fitted

The short shifter does reduce the stick throw a bit but as you are happy with things as they are its probably not worth the expense. Mine was well goosed so it was a no brainer perhaps in another 20yrs or so :)
