Removed the housing to replace the seals but the housing journal surface is showing signs of wear (not polished but flat matt in places)

Is this caused by worn balance shaft bearings? Do I need to replace the balance shaft housing?

Was hoping to only replace the seals!

Looking at it again today there seems to be a fair amount of side to side play in the upper balance shaft (with the support housing removed). How do I check the balance shaft bearings for wear? I notice the balance shaft can be moved back and forth a fair bit too.

Does the support housing look shot from this pic? If so can the bearing in the support housing be replaced? Or does the housing have to be replaced altogether?

Don't think they are replaceable?

Only the shaft bearing shells

They're white metal shells.... Just press the old one out and press a new one in.

Thanks, you are right. Spotted them in the parts catalogue last night and also found the spec for the balance shafts dia.

Will measure and check the shafts tonight and order the bearing sleeves. Not done this before, but I am guessing some kind of tooling (other than the press) is needed for pressing the sleeve in. Is this the sort of job I can get done at any garage, or does it have to be a Porker specialist?

Is there any way of checking the balance shaft bearing without taking the housings off??

I made a little mandrel to press them in and out with .. if I can find it you're more than welcome to borrow it ...

About to order the balance shaft support housing sleeves but not sure if I need standard size or plus 0.5mm oversize.

Measured the balance shafts today and both are very marginally under the lower wear limit at 1.2200in (According to Haynes the spec is 1.2204in to 1.2210in)

If they're just outside wear tolerance then oversized shells won't fit unless the shafts are ground down to size..

I have to be honest and say that when I did mine I didn't even think about measuring for wear and just fitted standard sized bushes.

Makes sense. Standard it is then.

My annual mileage is very low, so it should be a good few years before they need grinding for oversize - hopefully!
