Post subject: | Engine Ground Removal |
Hi there, Has anyone managed to get the engine ground off the bell housing without having to disconnect the coolant line running from the engine through the firewall in order to get access? I want to remove and clean the ground wire but I don't want to have to disconnect the coolant system to do this. Any top tips? I removed and cleaned the battery ground with a salt/vinegar solution then bicarb bath and it really cleaned it up. Nice and shiny now. My engine ground is thick with verdigris (due to proximity tot he coolant lines) and I want to thoroughly clean it. Thanks |

I did this this afternoon as part of the clutch replacement job (knackered now - but clutch is out). You need to free off as much cabling and vacuum pipes as you reasonably can in the area. Whilst lying on top of the engine with a torch in your mouth (small torch) you can push the heater hose and valve to the passenger side with an extension bar or similar and you can just see it. Its a 13mm head. To undo it you need a @ 6" extension (preferable 3/8ths drive socket set). Push the heater hose over to the drivers side and you can get the socket onto the bolt head and undo it. Putting it all back again will be a challenge so I am going to relocate the electronics ground to somewhere nearby and easier to get at, after unravelling the ground wire which on mine is wrapped around the engine harness several times for some odd reason. Just refitting the braided earth lead shouldn't be too bad as the braided cable is quite stiff. Have fun |

Hi, I just replaced both the main earthing straps, boot and bulkhead, with new. Big difference to the way the car turns over. Make sure you place a bit of tape over the inspection hole to the flywheel just below the bulkhead earth to save dropping the bolt in there. |

With the awkardness of removing the current earth strap, would there be any issues in just making a new engine earth connection somewhere else and place a new strap between that and the bulkhead? |

no, making a new earth bonding point would work - better if its on the clutch housing with the starter motor |
