Hi All,

Not really looking for help, just somewhere to vent that it seems that the rubber ring in the clutch has gone - 32 years and 120,000 miles on it so shouldn't be too upset.

Regardless, it most definitely wasn't going when I bought it 6 weeks ago - I was sure to check for slack in the driveline. Just my luck that as I buy it it starts to go wrong!

If I give it the slip the clutch into gears treatment, can I carry on using it for the time being? Would rather leave the £500 in parts for next month!

Will!

I left mine a good 20k before I changed it... I was waiting for it to actually break. I ended up changing the engine before it finally gave out.

Thanks for the reply.

I did have a quick look over the net and the limp home tabs seem pretty chunky so I wasn't too concerned. I'll definitely get it sorted this summer, did you DIY it?

I've read a load of DIY's discussing doing it from below, but my thoughts are if I pull the engine out of the top I can do a few bits and bobs whilst it's there - does that turn it into a nightmare job?

I did an engine swap so I'd done it out of the car. I have done it underneath by removing the transaxle due to a failing release bearing by moving the torque tube back but it was a pain in the backside.

On an N/A I personally preferred removing the whole lot as the access is easier but the job is longer. Also if you go that route it's worth giving the engine a go over for leaks etc whilst everything is easily accessible. I wouldn't want to remove the turbo engine though as the turbo itself is a right pain.

Did you follow broadly the technique here? http://944lux.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/en ... peasy.html

My thoughts are that I'd like to do the belts, I'd like to have a look over the seals and give it a full service and clean up... Probably not enough to justify pulling the engine, but if it stops any head bangingly frustrating moments lying under the car I can deal with that. Wouldn't mind giving the steering rack and suspension rubbers a once over too...

How much longer do you reckon it takes? It means I finally have reason to buy an engine hoist... New tools!
