I have recently been told that my suspected rear wheel bearing hum, could actually be the new Continentals (225/50 ZR 16 92W) I have on the back. Has anyone else had this issue

I have just fitted a pair of 17" Sport Contact 2s to the back of my 968 and haven't noticed any unusual noise. Had the same tyres on before and they were fine too.

Which version of Sport Contact have you got?

Don't know which version. What do I look for on the tyre?

I expect they will either be called Sport contact or premium contact and a number after that

Premium contact are just general tyres, sport contact are as the name suggests, a higher performance tyre

I've just fitted new Continental Conti Sport Contact tyres all round to my cab. Can't say I've noticed any new noises.

Cheers,
Bryan

If they are "Continental SportContact 225/50 ZR16 92W" then they might indeed be quite noisy with an EU dB rating of 75 dB
If they are "Continental SportContact 225/50 ZR16 92Y N2" i.e. in Porsche specific fitment, then they are fairly quiet with an EU dB rating of 71 dB.

They were fitted just before I bought the car

There you go then, as Glenn points out, these are the non Porsche rated tyres and have a higher noise rating

If the old tyre ratings are anything to go by the new ones IMO will mean nothing.

However, I have always found Contis to be quiet on almost all of the cars I have had them fitted to including my new daily!

Im beginning to doubt the noise is from the tyres, to be honest.
Even though I've recently had the gearbox oil changed, I'm going to check the levels. There is some kind of leak I have noticed coming from the top. Is it possible for oil to leak out where the shift rod passes through?
