Full brake line kit arrived from Automec on Friday so Sunday morning opened box intending to start replacing all the corroded pipes (got advisory on MoT) I already had a reel of pipe, unions and tools but decided to splash out and speed the job up by getting a premade kit, thinking their flares will be better than mine. Oh dear wrong flares on all pipes and unions are right thread but longer which shouldn't be a problem. So sending it back with a sample of the correct single/bubble flare or DIN, not double or SAE as provided. May seal but they are different for a reason. I know a few people on the forum have used their kit did you check your flares? |

Evidently its a universal flare used on copper and Cupronickel pipes to increase contact area when tightened. |

interesting wonder if that is really true. as the doubles will only seal on the edges, the bottom of the holes for the fittings is concave not convex |

Just what I thought, rang them today and they said it was intentional. There is another supplier of premade pipes that use the same flare. I'll try one first and if it leaks they go back, can't see why the correct unions and flare are not used. The face of the union is also as photo ie. slightly concave whereas the porsche type is flat |

I have never used Automec on the Porsche but I have on other cars and they have been fine. The Tr7 had a set fitted. I normally do my own pipes these days and flare them exactly the same as the Automec ones and have never had an issue apart from length. Just fit them and don't worry about it. They sell thousands of sets, if there was a problem they would have changed them. |

Thanks Jim for the feedback and reassurance I needed. I found the universal flare description on the brakepipes2go site. Automec have been very helpful and quick. I'm a bit paranoid about brake lines had 3 cars that suffered complete brake loss due to corroded pipes and one a failed flare (my fault) but that was many years ago:- Standard Vanguard,Austin Cambridge and 2 MGAs. Luckily all without incident other than a red face at Zandvoort when I spun on the first bend. The flare fail was due to an inadequately supported copper line, snapped clean through due to vibration. |
