Looks like over the winter the bottom wheel nut on each wheel has been in water which has collected in the recess. Pulled the car out today and this said nut was looking furry so rubbed with a screw driver and it flaked away. Any ideas on removing the now rounded crumbly nut? I've seen some irwin sockets that look like they'll do the trick. Do we think a garage would have a way to do it? Is this common and can I get steel nuts which will last better? I live on the coast do is slightly saltier. |

I own a set of the Irwin nut extractors you've mentioned and they are really good at removing damaged rounded nuts. I don't have the size you'd need for a wheel nut or I'd have sent it for you to try. As for steel nuts, yes they are available. I have a full set lying in the garage, they're open ended so not as nice looking as the alloy ones and also a bit heavier. Recommended for track use iirc. |

My Dolomite Sprint had alloy wheel nuts as standard and I thought it was the only car to have these until I got my 944 that is. I did track days since the 70's so replaced with steel ones but the 944 still has its alloy ones. Are there any other cars that have alloy nuts? |

I made the mistake of not knowing they were alloy when I first changed a wheel - my previous 924 had steel nuts so I was a little ignorant... Imagine my horror when my 12pt socket just span out on the windy gun and spat out a load of aluminium chippings .. I couldn't work it out at first, then it dawned on me ... Oh - my - f uck.... Thankfully all I'd done is taken the corners of the nut off, the flats were still ok, so I used a 6pt socket from my Teng 3/8 kit and with a little gentle persuasion the nut came off - and went straight into the bin! I picked up a couple of second-hand OE nuts as spares and have treated my nuts with the greatest of respect since. Has anyone had any experience of the after-market jobs that you can get on Ebay - £50 something for a set of 25... G |

I got a brand new set of 16 off the bay for £34 and a set of locking nuts for £25 as mine were just as flaky.... Needed the windy gun of the local tyre place to get the damaged lock nut off though... The new ones have been fine since. Think I might invest in one of those sockets that has a protective sleeve inside or alloy nuts... Do up the other nuts with a big bar, Jack handle or the like. This should take pressure off the other nut and make it slightly easier to remove |
