Post subject:  advice on a decat exhaust needed

Looking to change my exhaust for a Dansk, but also fancy getting rid of the cat. Does anyone know of a complete bolt on system ( cat onwards) they can recommend. I presume I would have to hack off the existing cat.
Or would it be a case of having to buy a proMAX decat and a Dansk rear.
Cheers

Or can I just use a non cat exhaust

Better to include a resonator.

Resonator? Would that go inplace of the cat? Is that what the proMAX decat kit is?

As far as Im aware its just a piece of pipe. A resonator is an intermediate silencer. Lose the cat/resonator and itll sound nice, but it probably wont go as well.

Theres a fellow on one of the FB groups now experiencing this very same phenomenon.

Well ive just got an email from proMAX saying their decat pipe is in effect a silencer. But only for coupes not cabriolets (which is a pain)!

Am i right in thinking '89 s2's didn't have a cat and if so does anyone know if a there is a pre '90 non cat dansk system with a silencer instead?

Hi when I had my 1992 S2 I had a Dansk back box fitted to the standard exhaust, I then cut out the Cat and replaced it with a piece of pipe (no resonator).
I didn't notice any real difference , maybe a little more noise, which may have made it feel a little quicker but nothing really.
On my 968 I've run a full janspeed decat system (no silencer or resonator in place of the Cat) it sounds great but resonates, more noticeably on motorways. I have replaced the de cat pipe with the standard cat and noticed more torque, but I'm thinking of modifying the de cat pipe to add either a resonator or a sports cat to hopefully retain the torque and regain the noise.
Hope my ramblings are of help

Simon, I am fairly sure that ProMAX's decat comes with a silencer as part of it :).

Years ago I bought a decat kit and Dansk rear box off Promax for my Cab , and yes it has a small resonator box / silencer where the cat was.Seem to recall that the decat resonator was made by janspeed. Not sure of the significant difference between a coupe and a cab exhaust , because altho the cab has effectively a double skinned floorpan , I thought the exhaust was well clear of it.

That's much better then Chas. Id definitely opt for this first silencer/resonator rather than a piece of pipe.

Are the cats normally bolted to the down pipe or is it welded cause this is what mine looks like. Does it look normal?

Just got off the phone to proMAX and there is an issue with clearance on a cabrio floor plan. Can knock on a certain point. So the stainless decat would need modifying. Not sure I fancy that.

I have a coupe ('89), but went through the various options last summer as I blew the baffles
in the centre resonator on a wee trip to Braemar...ahem. It really made a hell of a noise
and made the car unpleasant to drive. The exhaust that remained was ok ish, but
In the end I had a stainless system made from bottom of d/pipes to the tail and its worked
out just fine for me. I had RJM in Glenrothes sort it all out and it fits perfectly
with a nice gentle tone at cruising and some smooth sonics once I give it some.

They did a centre silencer/resonator and a big rearbox with my choice of tailpipe
all custom built up and fitted for mid £500's which I was quite happy with.

There are pics of it if you look back around september ish last year.

I bought a Dansk back box and took the front section to my local exhaust guy - who immediately said "that's from a 944" so in knew I was in good hands - I asked him if I could put a straight through pipe in place of the front silencer and he said no problems. £30 later and I was a happy camper. Sounds fab.
