Hi All,

Just to introduce myself as this is my first post.

25 years old, live in Surrey England. Have a 2014 C250CDI Auto which it seems that my girlfriend uses more than me - we both do 20 miles a day commuting. I have been using my motorbike or bicycle a couple of days a week.

We decided that we needed a second car. In her mind she was thinking Smart Car / Corsa, in my mind I was thinking Porsche 944 / 996 / Citreon 2CV! (dont ask). I'm a bona fide vehicle hoarder currently in possession of a 1970 Vespa Super 150, a Vespa ET4, Honda CBR1100 Blackbird and in the past have owned a Mobylette 50cc, Yamaha 125 and Honda CBR 125.

Car history! Current Merc C250CDI Coupe Automatic (white  , sensible, economical, easy to drive and doesnt break down!), Merc CLK270CDI, BMW 325ti, Peugeot 306 HDI, Citreon Saxo and Rover Metro (absolutely loved the metro!).

Because of the way relationships work, and the fact the second car would most likely be driven by me (with her driving the brand new car that I pay for!). I decided to get a 944! - there is something about them that I've always liked, I think it's the muscular look. I had thought about a 996 but it's a bit too flashy for me and would probably cost too much.

I ended up buying it yesterday, it's silver, cream (beige!) suede / leather interior with brown dash - 1983 square dash.

I had just got out of the Mercedes when I drove it so accepted that the steering would be heavy, but after 200 miles it still is very heavy ! (non power steering) - It's got Porsche Cup 1 wheels and a barchetta 350mm steering wheel, would this make a difference? No rust on the sills or through the vent gabs

I need the alignment doing (for my own satisfaction) - Any idea how much this will cost? The engine mountings need swapping over as it's very vibey. I'll do this do one evening this week, looks a simple enough job.

I paid £2300, which I didn't think was a rip off. It's got 109,000 miles, lots of receipts (though non for the clutch, so this will need doing eventually). It's got a stainless steel sports exhaust which I think is a little loud and will change eventually - perhaps when the engine mounts are changed this won't grind me so much.

I bought the seller as much as the car as he had 3 356's in his garage!

For me the main issue is the steering, I'm 18 stone and I'm finding it a little heavy, and the steering wheel isn't quite on centre - assume alignment issue - is that common?

Will

Hi Will and welcome

Where in Surrey are you ?
I'm over in Kingston

Not quite sure what you mean by alignment, for many on here that means a full suspension geometry set up which is probably from £150 +
However if it is just to re align the steering wheel then you may just need tracking reset slightly.

Hi Jason,

Based in Leatherhead, often in Weybridge / Kingston & surrounding area.

It's a steering wheel thing with the alignment - It's got a momo boss and a steering wheel on top, can't work out if that hasn't been fitted correctly (it is possible to fit it wonky?) or if the tracking just needs resetting.

Welcome to the front fours.

My 924 came with a smaller diameter Mountney steering wheel and the steering felt heavy but after I switched it to the standard two spoke style the steering felt significantly lighter at low speeds, Although not as light as my 944 with assisted steering. That's the beauty of it.

Doing the wheel alignment may effect the rotational angle of the steering wheel it won't necesarily make it lighter, but it will make it feel more accurate. I know I just did my 944 after new wishbones and adjustable shocks and everything was way out.

Your Merc is a modern car with probably more power assistance than it really needs and it's going to feel a LOT lighter than a non assisted setup like your '44.

You'll come to love it.
