Guys,

the rears (225/50/16) on my S2 Cab will need replacing soon. Currently have P6000 all round but the fronts are good.

Had a quick look on the net and there don't appear to be P6000's available generally so just wondering what you suggest to go with the 6000's on the front.

Usage is road only and 5-6k miles/yr mostly summer.

I would suggest replacing them all. In my experience, and countless others, P6000's are know as ditch finders and are made of a substance somewhere between concrete and granite. They also seem to never wear out!

In all seriousness I had them on the front of my turbo when I got it and the difference was night and day when they were replaced.

Toyo T-1R's are good, but quite soft and I found wore quickly, but trade off was good wet and dry grip. Falken 452's are well thought of on here to but not sure if widely available anymore.

Some others will offer opinion soon no doubt.

With a snippet from JMG (who knows a thing or 2 about 944's )
I have used Toyo Proxes on my Turbo since 2007 but will probably change to Barum Bravarius 2 next time as I have had to change them due to age not life! (dont use it as much as I would like to)
I kept a record of this earlier recommendation for future ref. (Don't think Jon at JMG will mind me reiterating it)

"Want my recommendation for a 944? Barum Bravarius 2. Barum are part of continental and this tyre has been made as their market offering in the same way Toyo entered the performance market years ago with their Proxy tyres, as such, at the moment the price is great and the performance is awesome. Bet in a year or two they will be priced much higher. A soft compound, so will probably not last 50,000 miles, but the average Porsche often needs tyres because of age rather than wear, and soft tyres are sticky tyres."

I was a passenger in Jon's white Turbo round Belton Park and the Barum Bravarius 2 Tyres performed really well in the dry, they were very grippy (my stomache told me so )

From what I can see there is not much available in this size. The only viable choices I can see (if you exclude the comfort tyres) are

Toyo T1-Rs which are not my cup of tyres (IME they are squidgy with poor turn in (due to the super soft sidewalls in IMO and generally going off colour when they start getting close to the markers).

Dunlop SportMaxx RT - From what I have seen these are not too bad at all, they don't last long though

Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance - It is a comfort tyre biased for performance but it seems well balanced and grippy

Toyo R1R - The grippiest and also the noisiest tyre out all of the suggestions. I would be tempted to leave these unless ultimate grip is your main aim with a couple of compromises (tyre noise and longevity being the two main issues but not with the mileage you do

FWIW I have had scary times on P6000s but also fine ones too. The biggest issue with them IMO is that many peoples examples refer to 7 year old tyres - I am sure a 7 year old set of Goodyear GSD3s would be interesting! Saying that I am surprised have grippy my Toyo T1-Ss are on the RST (they are around 6-7 years old!) although that car has not seen much daylight! Things do get interesting in the wet mind you and I plan to change the tyres this year .

Try finding them now brand new in that size (but happy days if you do);).

When I last checked Falken 914s were available for them. On my latest acquisition almost none of the older choices are available, leaving me with only 2 or 3 choices from a previous 5!

From what I have seen even sizes in 17" are being affected leaving most of the tyres for 18" and above.

This topic prompted me to check the age of the tyres on my 944S2. I've had the car 3 years, so was thinking they must be due to change soon anyway. 1 didn't have a DOT code at all, 1 had a DOT code with no numbers, 1 had a DOT code of 3007 (bad enough) and the last one had 1002 - which means it was manufactured in 2002! 'kin scary or what?

So, I've stuck with the list of approved tyres quoted above and ordered Continental Contisport Contact all round. Cost from tyreleader.co.uk was £312.36, which does not include fitting.

A rather a mixed response but only to be expected I guess.

I couldn't find many of those tyres available in the right sizes so my conclusion is to replace all 4 as recommended, probably with those Continentals that Briggy found.

Funnily enough I had been looking for tyres in these sizes this morning as I have a set of 16" teledials on the way.

Been a while since I bought 16" tyres, seems 225/50 R16 is not a common size anymore!!

I was hoping to find some Pilot Sports or Eagle Assymetrics - but no, mainly comfort tyres!!

I notice Uniroyal do the Rainsport 3 in these sizes. Any experiences?

When I had my Clio 182 the RS2 used to be raved about.

Tbh, with most premium tyres I think cold/wet performance is more important, dry grip will be similar on the road, but with our climate having decent performance in the wet makes more of a difference IMO.

Will look at the continentals also, but was hoping to see sport contacts available rather than what I assume are more of as comfort tyre.

I have uniroyal rs3's on the front. A very soft, grippy tire, excellent in the wet. And despite the softness no noticeable wear yet after 1k miles. My T-1R's would be tracking the edges by now due to my negative camber. Unfortunately they are not made in my rear size so still got T-1R's on the back but they wear even there so no dramas.

What about Bridgestone S02 ?

i know quite a few people happy with these including myself,
I ran mine in en route to North Wales in September, then hooned around Snowdonia for 3 days including quite a few laps of the Evo Triangle
Couldn't fault them
