I noticed an article in The Times Driving supplement this weekend where a contributor who is challenged with making £20k in a year from classic car trades has just bought a 1988 944 LUX. He reports that the prices of the front engine Porsches are all showing rises due to the increased demand for classic 911's outstripping supply. He loves the 944 he bought and says its a fantastic drive.

They are indeed, quite rapidly too.

Not sure of all the reasons, it could be the cull of a recession had seen the prices drop over the last 5 to 7 years to a point where people didnt maintain them and threw in the towel when repairs approached the value of the car. Other reasons could be recent interest in the cars from other right hand markets, such as Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan, which really did not see these cars in the 80's.. Another theory is that the Classic car market improving has dragged up prices, or it could be that air cooled 911 speculators have run out of cars to buy, so they are leaping on 944's as investments, in particular low mileage ones.

Not sure about the causes, but it is happening. Not only this, but there are not as many for sale as there was even this time last year, but many less than there was usually for the last decade.

Makes a 944 cab at £4500 seem cheap
;-)

I nearly sold mine last year but a quick drive and I decided to keep it. So a quicky for JMG, what's mine worth now John?? You did some work on it 3 years ago, it's the Liverpool Turbo.

Oh yes Jon whats mine worth then you know it well (since 2007 Simons Baby :D ).
Have just renewed my insurance & upped it to £15,000 Agreed Value & had the bodywork sorted with full clear coat respray.
Perhaps better leave it till annual Service/Mot in a few months so you can see it in the flesh
Oh & it's definitely NOT for sale (not going through that lot again!)

At the moment it is really difficult to put values on the 944 models for resale value, the market is changing so fast and the prices being paid no longer has anything to do with what one sells for on ebay, what is written in a price guide book or any other clues, other than basing prices on the best price something very similar has sold for recently.

For insurance values things are a little easier, as insurance approved valuations are not just based on how much it would cost to pick one up for on the open market, like it would be with a modern car where there are so many on the market you would be able to find one in your colour and spec and the prices are a level playing field, but instead are intended to agree a cost of replacement or compensation for its loss, which includes getting a typical one from the market up to the same standard as yours, and this last element, getting the standard up to scratch, is quite solid, as parts prices and labour rates have not doubled in value in the last year or so, as have the values of a good 944 turbo. I will be able to do this for you Clive during your next visit.

Finding this topic interesting as I'm thinking of selling my 944. Not sure what it could be worth to sell, it's a '87 D reg, 39000 miles, full service records etc inc bill of sale from AFN at £24000 ( in 1987 ). Car is in top condition. Have it insured for £15000. What do you others think it might be worth. Thanks
