Hi All, I am now on my second 944, the first was a 86 Lux 8v and now I have an S2, the question I have is on both cars the oil pressure was 3.5 bar on tick over once the engine was warm and 5 bar when on the road doing my bit for Porsche but now the pressure is at 4.5 on tick over and off the scale heading toward 6 (if it had one). Can anyone shed a bit of light on this once. Cheers Pete ![]() |

Guess I think the gauge isn't the most accurate in the world. ![]() |

Hi Jim, Its is running on 10-40 oil from the last owner, the last service was back in Jan this year, the level on the dip stick is 3/4, is the release valve easy too get at! Cheers Pete |

I have an S2 and a 924S the S2 runs at around 5b over 2k rpm and around 2.5-3.5b at tick over depending on how hot the car is similar pressures on the 924S just a bit more stable at tick over. I run both cars on 0W-40 either Castrol Edge or Formula RS fully synthetic, when I used thicker oil 15w semi synth in the 924S it ran significantly higher pressures reading over the top but no issues on 0W-40 and no oil usage beyond normal either. So maybe the oil has been topped up at some time with something too thick but cheap to get it up to level. Also had an issue once on my motorbike when some daft garage used the wrong oil filter which because of where the oil pressure sender was sent the pressure over the top. |

Thanks, I might give it an oil change this weekend too see if that does the trick!, I had used 10-40 in the old 8v engine, do you think I should use 0-40 in the S2 its just a weekend car which only goes on short trips. ![]() Cheers Pete |

If the relief valve sticks you normaly have no oil pressure. Don't mess with it. Porsche recomend replacement if there faulty & there expensive. I've been there. If you use 0/40 then your s2 may burn more than it does now. I use 5/40 in my lux. It depends on engine condition. If you join the club you can get discount from GSF & they do Fuchs fully synthetic for £18ish (Before discount.) You need two though. |

It could just be the oil pressure sender. I had one go one my S and it sent the gauge off the top. Fairly easy to fix I think. I think I am right in saying that these gauges rely on resistance to give a reading so if there is a fault then they will default up the gauge not down. So you might want to fish the gauge pod out and check all the fixings and the earth points on the car. |

It may not be worth running synth unless you run extended service periods. I use normal mineral oil & change it more often. A 944 or similar would have been designed around a standard mineral oil anyway. |

tr7v8 wrote: Guess I think the gauge isn't the most accurate in the world. ![]() i found that when i got my car the oil pressure never dropped below 4 bar even when well warm, not sure what the oil was but it always seemed a bit thicker than the mobil 1 the OPC put in it now, and the oil pressure hovers around 3 1/2 bar when fully warm |

Mine is fairly knackered & sits at 3.5 even when stinking hot. this is with 15/50 Valvoline Turbo which I buy in bulk. |

I am going to try GTX Mag 10-40 and a new filter, I had this oil in my old 2.5 8v which was 3.5 on tick over and 5 bar on the road. I will let you know later today if it works! ![]() Cheers Pete |

update: I have done the oil and filter, GTX Mag 10-40, put some engine oil flush in before the oil change. The engine sounds nice and smooth ![]() ![]() ![]() Cheers Pete |

As I originally posted quite likely to be a dodgy sender but they are B expensive to change on spec. Phone around a local garage & see if someone has a master gauge to plug in & test it. Mine runs over the 5 Bar mark at times & personally I wouldn't worry unless it's leaking oil all over the place. |

Sometimes we have too many gauges to worry about in our cars. Just remember most cars will never have an oil pressre gauge and so the owner never needs to worry about it. Mine failed recently (read off the scale over 5 bar all the time) and the best price I could find was £24 at Type911 http://www.type911shop.co.uk/shop/artic ... d%3D861%26 It simply unbolts from below the oil filter (once you have drained the oil) but I had to buy a 24mm spanner to get at it |
