I have heard that silicon spray can help fix seatbelts which are slow to retract, but does it affect the webbing in any way??? I.e. degrade or weaken it...

I doubt it will make much difference. From my experience after a time the retractor mechanics starts to die & once that happens then the reel is toast. I've had 3 or 4 changed over the years for similar faults.

My seat belts were a bit sluggish so I streched them right out and washed them throughly with washing liquid in a large bucket of water then rinsed them out, then softened them with fabric conditioner rinsed again and then left streched out to dry.

They now feel nice, smell nice and retract on their own with no problem.

I would not put any kind of lubricant on them personally, but it's your life in a crash
