Hi Guys, could someone please tell me if there are any differences between the 2.5 manual box & the 2.7 manual box I.E will the 2.5 box go on the 2.7 ?, are the Ratios the same ? I have some strange noises coming from the box area, im planning on changing the box oil in a hope that it cures the noise, but just trying to prepare myself in case I have to look for a new box, cheers as always, Jinxy

Hi, I had a look at the chart..

I reckon your 2.7 gearbox will be the 016J ASG 944 (1989-1991) No LSD, the ratios are:
10:35 (3.500)
17:35 (2.059)
25:35 (1.400)
29:30 (1.034)
35:29 (0.829)

9:35 (3.889)

An earlier 2.5 would have 016J 5Y 944 (1985.5-1988) 924S (1986-1988), with these ratios:
10:36 (3.600)
16:34 (2.1250)
24:35 (1.4583)
28:30 (1.0714)
35:29 (0.8286)

9:35 (3.8889)

So there are some differences there. Physically - any oval dash 944 gearbox should fit as they all have the same mountings. The earlier square dash models have different mounting brackets and do not have the electronic speedo sender you require (so don't get one of those). Best bet would be getting a box from a 944S, as the ratios are the same as the 2.7 and the box itself was beefed-up a bit for the S model (stronger pinion gear I believe?). An S2 box will also fit, but again some of the ratios are different. Hope that helps a bit more..

Hi Guys, turned out to be a bolt on the gear shaft had worked loose & caused damage inside, a gearbox rebuild would have cost £2000 ,but I managed to fund a 2.7 box for £200 plus delivery with only 84k miles on it, worked perfectly now & I'm well happy & back enjoying driving again.

I replaced My 2.5 1986 Lux gearbox with a 2.7 about 5 years ago and its was a lot smoother and with no issues.

Now that is awesome !! Often wondered what went on inside our gearboxes, point to note here is that one of the two bolts at the end of the gear cluster in the video is what worked loose on my box causing damage, thanks for sharing this.
