Post subject: | S2 coolant leak - help to identify where from..... |
I've noticed that when hot I have a slow drip of coolant leaking from a plastic flange to the front left of my S2 engine. I have tried to tighten the allen bolts that secure it but they won't budge and I'm worried that if I apply much more force they will snap. If anyone has had a similar issue I'd be interested to know how you resolved it. It would also be handy to know what the part is (I've attached a couple of pics below). Looks like it might be off the front of the water pump housing? Cheers in advance ![]() [img][/img] [img][/img] |

the o ring is leaking, normally worth replacing elbow & o ring together, they are not a huge cost from an OPC |

As the man said above. However, why is there water on the fan shroud? Was the shot taken in the rain? |

Thanks both ![]() Any idea of part number or of the exact name of the part I need to ask for? Also, the allen bolts are solid and I'm worried they will snap when I try and remove them. What's the advice here, lots of penetrating fluid before hand and gently does it.....would be a right pain to have to remove a snapped thread due to the poor access ![]() Re water on fan shroud, it had been raining during the night and then I washed the car before the pic was taken, so pretty sure it's not from a leak.....will double check though! |

Hi, the bolts generally seize due to corrosion and oxidisation occurring between the dissimilar metals (steel and alloy). So, penetrating oil sometimes doesn't help too much as it cant get down between the threads (as they are bunged up with deposits)...but I still do use it, as it can help a bit. What I have found is it is a good idea to 'wake up' the bolt by giving it a good tap. I believe this helps fracture the deposits around the bolt threads. Always use a really good fitting Allen key, one that will not slip and round off, etc. Always clean the bolt head of 'stuff & dirt', especially where the key fits, as you want as good a fit as possible. Then, a gentle tap on the key to start the bolt moving as sometimes just applying a turning force can twist the head off. Once you get it going, do a small turn to undo, then counter that back to release tension in the bolt. Keep on doing this until the bolt comes out, do not think that as it is almost out you can just wind it out...it can bind and shear at any point (as I have found out ![]() In other situations applying heat would generally help quite a bit, but in your case the components around would melt! Good luck - oh the joys of these old cars! |

I would be inclined to remove the complete water pump and do a rebuild/check, then the allen bolts can be removed more easily - and if the heads do snap off, the repairs can be simply done... Dave |
