Hi,

Could I run this problem past you all please.

I parked up at work today as usual. When I got back to the car at the end of the day my battery was flat. It wouldn't fire up. I could hear a clicking noise coming from the fuse box. I removed a few relays one at a time and noticed that the clicking stopped when I removed the cooling fan relay (part no 944 615 105 01).

I managed to get a jump start and then put the relay back in (causing the fan to run permanently now) and drove home. Ive left the car on the drive minus the relay (as it will presumably keep the fan running all night and the battery will again be flat in the morning.

Will it simply be a case that the relay has failed and I need to source another?

There is one on ebay for £30 which seems a bit steep to me.

Is it possible to fix them?

Cheers for any help.

I could be the coolant temp sensor has failed, when they do the fans stay running, the way to tell if it's the sensor (top right hand side of the radiator) is to pull the wires from it, if the fans stop, it's the sensor, if they continue to run, it's the relay.... :D

I had a similar problem while in France recently - my car has A/C and the lower speed fan was the issue for me. If it's any consolation the Porsche centre in Annecy told me that a replacement relay would be €228.00!

I ended up taking the cover of my relay and cleaning the contacts inside, and refitting with copious amounts of GT85. I replaced the relay with a NOS unit I found on the 'Bay for £35.00 and the problem disappeared - for a while. Later I replaced the thermo-switch on the rad as the problem resurfaced but like a knob forgot to replenish the expansion tank. Since filling the tank properly I haven't had a recurrence...

Tip of the day - you'll need a box spanner or a deep socket to get the thermo-switch out as standard socket isn't long enough to engage the hex before the plug top hits the top of the socket.

Hi, I had this problem this year, its almost certainly the thermo switch and yes its a git to get to. Its right under the large hose with limited clearance. To change it you'll make your life a lot easier by removing the airbox first. Then you need a 30mm deep socket and if you're quick you can swap them over without the need to drain the cooling system (probably best to cover the alternator) . Tighten to 30nm.

Well I left the 944 with a friendly garage today who had a look for me (I don't have a garage and trying to get access was a nightmare) They didn't charge me but ascertained that the problem is the thermofan switch as many have predicted.

Ordered one today from OPC Newcastle for £18 (part no 951-606-481-00)

Just going to have to keep removing the relay after driving until I get it fixed.

Cheers again for the advice
