last couple of times i have driven my 944S i have noticed it has died but qiuckly picked up again, but yesterday it died at some traffic lights (turning right in right hand lane) and wouldn't start, removed/refitted DME relay and fired straight up, drove car home and removed relay for further investigation to find it date stamped 10 87 , therefore probably original, phoned OPC and picked one up £23 inc vat fitted and drove car for about 5 miles and seems ok, anybody else got an older DME still working ?

Mine has a part number starting 993 which seemed a bit odd to me. I didn't even think the 993 was about in 1983.

Then again I haven't managed to start the engine yet.

my new one has a 993 prefix, these are the modified relay, old one has 944 prefix

Mine's been temperamental on the old relay :?
But when I replaced it with a 993 part number, it still played up. Now it's happy to work on both, so the old one seems to be fine and I have a spare :)

I'm still on the original (datestamped '89), hence the reason I carry a spare!!

One starting 993 is the good'un the 944 ones are bad, but I still carry a spare :mrgreen:

If it isn't the DME but starts when you fiddle around near there then it could be the 2 connections for the flywheel sensors. They are near the fuse crate & do go intermittant, mine has done this a few times recently.

Hi,

From the information I have the DME relay in 944s, 924Ss, 968s and 964s originally carried the part number 944.615.227.00.

The part was then updated for the 993 and subsequently carried the part number 993.615.227.00. This part is a direct replacement for the original 944 unit.

The two parts look the same but Porsche claim that the revised (993) part is more reliable than the original.

Therefore, new (replacement) relays for the cars mentioned above should have the 993 number

Relays for the Carrera 3.2 are different and are numbered 911.618.154.00

Mine was on it's original until 2 weeks ago stamped '85.
Now it has the one from my parts car which is stamped '83!

25 years old, thats impressive, by the way what colour is your parts car ?


and how fond are you of said parts? ;)

My 83 looks more and more of a mess the further I delve into it, it seems that most panels are held on with luck instead of screws.

Rob. it does take perseverence :?
Mine had been hardly used for fifteen years when I started driving it last year. Now it's back in the garage and will take me a while to sort out the small points. Good thing winter is coming. Means I don't have to rush to get it all finished :|

Silver. But the paint is average at best on most panels.

Was going to start stripping it in the next couple of weeks as I have access to a ramp.
Anything in particular you were after?

I had the same problem on my 944S, replaced the DME relay and so far so good, that was a few years ago. My father who is a retired auto electrician got a tip i think from Clarks garage which is you can keep in your car some wires linked with spade terminals and a diagrame so that if you get stuck you can take the relay off and basically replace it with the wires which will get you home. I can vouch for this as i have done it when my relay was on the blink.

PS It also helps pin point that the problem lies in the relay before going and buying a new one
