Hi All, finally got my finger out and joined the forum after lurking and searching for tips & how too's etc over the last three months or so
Lots of great info on here so much appreciated!

Anyhoo, my s2 replaced a lovely old 325i cabrio which we'd had for over 8 years and enjoyed, but itchy feet and all that so it finally went to a good home.

Bought the S2 knowing it was going to swallow some doh as it had only done around 1100 miles in nearly 8 years, but crucially had been dry stored and had still had money put into her such as brakes, interior and front end bushes (poly). Was running a bit rough on collection due to needing a bloody good service, but I'm beginning to get there! :)

The plan was to get into all the techy bits just now and body later. She is guards red with linen leather, cup 1's and the sport wheel. As I am a true luddite I am incapable of putting up pics just yet but I'll get there (eventually).

Jobs so far:

Oil/filter mobil 1 & gen
Gen distributor cap
Clean up plugs/rotor arm
All belts/rollers
Water pump
Thermostat/coolant
Oem rear dampers
Gearbox drain/refill (royal purple)
Brake fluid flush (superblue)
Re-built pas with new seals & new dexron111
Fuel filter gen
Strip/clean all brakes
Sunroof seals
Coolant sensor
DME relay
Waxoil various areas

And just today a d/pipes back stainless power flow system. Haven't heard it yet but it looks lovely up on the ramps! For those interested check out rjm & sons site (no connection to me) and look at their Facebook page. I used them 3 years ago for a twin stainless set up on my stage 3 Saab Aero and it was very very good indeed, a nice tone and NO drone! Hopefully they will have done as good a job here, if not I will let you know!!

The cils aren't terrible, but the plan is to get stuck into then over winter when funds allow so that she is hopefully fully fit for next summer and looking good.

I have a slightly erratic idle just now, too high when cold and hunting a little when hot if anyone has any ideas? I did the dme & coolant sensor as she seemed to be a bit rich running but it's still there.

Cheers
KennyP

Hola

Sounds like you're halfway there - just need to see some pics!

Hunting and erratic idle could be being caused by what I'm suffering from - knackered AFM syndrome ...
It's the bit at the front of the engine bay, just behind the rad and looks a little like an aluminium waffle.
That's the analogue version of a MAF sensor and it measures the amount of air flowing into the TB and reports it back to the DME which then thinks about a few other bits before squirting the right amount of fuel into the inlet manifold. Air flow through the meter controls a flap which is linked to a variable resistor comprised of a carbon track and a moving termiinal .. the technology is relatively complicated but the mechanics are simple. However, my AFM's carbon track is worn to the point of non-existence for the first 3-4 mm of its arc which is of course exactly where it is during 'normal' driving. My symptoms are a hunting idle 600 - 1200 rpm and mental bucking and surging between 2 to 3k rpm. The answer - keeping it over 3k rpm helps but I need a new AFM. here's a uchoob vid which details one way of doing it - there are others but you'll need to google..

This might help, but then I could also be talking absolute bollocks ...

Cheers

Greg

Cheers fella, haven't felt brave enough to break the seal, but it's got to be worth a try and a clean up at least, unless I completely cock it up in which case

The symptoms I'm experiencing are very similar indeed to what you're saying and the vid so I will give it a try when I can and let you know.

Ta,

KennyP

Idle Control Valve could be sticking a bit.
If you do take it off to clean,on an S2 with no power running to it ,it will be slightly open.that is normal.
My high idle(all the time hot or cold) was the Throttle Position Sensor(TPS)
It reads idle/mid throttle/full throttle and uses two microswitches to determine where the throttle is at.

Ok thanks for more pointers there. I have read a wee bit about the ICV and the TPS. Just not too sure of the exact locations yet. Andy from Promax mentioned that the TPS was adjustable but I'm still learning my way around these and have stuck with cleaning up contacts etc.

On a positive note, I collected the car today with the new exhaust fitted and I'm really impressed. No booming, much smoother and significantly quieter at a cruise due to there being no loose resonating centre baffles. It's early days, but it may be running a little cleaner due to better exhaust flow and there is now a nice exhaust rasp at the top end of the rev scale. Time as ever will tell, but if I can Suss out the last of the idle type issues then I shall be more than happy!

Thanks again
KennyP

The TPS is located on the side of throttle body. Its a small black box with a connector on it.
Two screws hold it in place.
With engine off, moving the throttle manually you should be able to hear a small click(microswitch operating) when you move it off its idle stop and again when you reach full throttle.
And obviously it should click when you come off of full throttle and again as it reaches the idle stop.
To adjust it you just need to loosen the two screws a bit, then rotate the TPS until you get clicks at the correct places.

My original TPS...WAS clicking at the correct places but using a multimeter i realised it was an internal fault.
I took it apart and found the microswitch was operating correctly but there was a fault between the switch and the connector.

Luckily i had a spare.

The ICV is under the inlet manifold,is a silver cylinder with two hoses and an electrical connector. It is a bit of a pig to remove and refit. I think carb cleaner is probably the best solvent to use on this.

Good luck

Thanks Tim,

I have just had a fiddle ( ) with the TPS. It didn't appear to be clicking so obviously beforehand as it does now. I am off for a wee try before I get involved in the more phaffing ICV.

Thanks again

Thanks for the info chaps, the tweak to the TPS appears to have solved my idle issues for the time being. Proper cold start after 2 days would normally have seen at least 1600rpms when cold and fluctuating when hot. Now it's a nice steady 1100rpms when cold and a gentle steady 800 ish when warmed through. Happy Days!! posting.php?mode=reply&f=25&t=18574#

I have borrowed (technical term) my exhaust photos of of rjm's site (thanks Clive!) so I get see what you all think. I havn'e gone for originality as I have always since day dot dislike the tailpipe Porsche did. Not sure why, just didn't do it for me. So a nicely fitting twin into the huge gap in the rear valence that ends flush with the car. Hope you like it!

Cheers
KennyP
