it is probably either stuck in the stopwatch mode (in which case press button no.3) or the connectors to the screen have not been put on straight (when I did mine this was quite a tricky thing to get right, and with the clock half diassembled it took me a few goes until the characters displayed correctly.
From my vague recollection (Google is your friend here) the buttons do the following:
Clock: No.3 changes to the stopwatch mode 1 & 2 (from memory) allow you to change the clock's time with all three buttons adjusting the time and whether you want the clock to display in a 12 or 24Hr format.
Stopwatch: 1- Starts/stops the stopwatch 2- resets the watch back to 0 3- Goes back to the clock.
