This could be entirely normal as I've never owned a car this old before but when I use the wipers on my 944 I have to manually stop them when they reach the bottom of the screen as if I stop them anywhere else they'll just stay there, is that normal or has something somewhere gone wrong? It's an early model with LHD wipers.

Also my locking fuel cap doesn't seem to lock no matter what I do with the key I can just unscrew it normally, is there a special trick for it or do I need to replace it? Would like to get it lockable after discovering how easy it is to siphon the tank.

The wipers could be a fauty switch. I had the same issue with a Mk1 Golf and a new switch fixed it.

Assuming the filler cap is the same as mine, screw it in until it clicks, then turn hold it to stop it turning and turn the key to the left. That should be locked I think.

I think I did that but I'll give it another go this weekend.

I was thinking it would be more likely to be a dodgy relay than a switch? I'll probably end up tearing it apart at some point anyway so when I'm in there I'll make sure all the contacts are clean.

On the wipers not parking, please see circuit diagram, no sure if you can make out the detail, but the relay has the :- functionality

TERM 53S=GREEN WIRE AT MOTOR

TERM 15 =BLACK/GREEN +12V VIA FUSE11 8AMP

TERM 31 =BROWN GND CHASSIS

TERM S1= BROWN/BLACK

TERM 53M=GREEN WIRE AT SWITCH

The relay is basically a timer control that the parks the mtr via the two wires 31b/switched to gnd and 53a/switched positive.

You can test the circuit at the relay in the fusebox

The locking fuel cap is screw it in until it clicks then hold the body & turn key clockwise 90Deg.

The lack of parking could be relay or either switch (parking one in the motor or stalk), it's worth once a month or so lifting the lid & reseating (push in) all the relays as the lift slightly.

Just picking up on the wiper issues as I have a similar problem but one with no wipers at all... I've been checking the switch which seems to check out fine as follows:

71 is +ve to horn contact strip

With the switch in the intermittent position there is continuity between 53a and 1
With the switch in the first up position there is continuity between 53a and 53
With the switch in the second up position there is continuity between 53a and 53b
With the switch in the third up position there is continuity between 53a and 53i

I haven't looked for the purpose of pins 53e or SR.... I suspect I t could be for the washer switch but I know that works anyway

Next step then is to see if there is power at the switch to pin 53a which I am hoping is to green wire Term 53m or 53s in the post above. All will be revealed later!

Checked power and continuity at the multi plug and we have 12v at 53a which completes a circuit at each of the switched connections: 1, 53, 53b and 53i.

Would it be safe to deduce that there is power to the switch to complete the circuit and the switch works as intended and I should now be looking at the motor?

I've not taken apart a 944 wiper motor, and this does contradict earlier posts, but what you can see in this video at 7:37 (https://youtu.be/eWpZI4KUrUk?t=7m37s) looks right to me...

Normally within the wiper motor on the geared down section there are a series of sliding electronic connections between the moving part and the casing. (I'd call them wiper connections, except we're talking about a wiper motor which would confuse matters!)
One of these connection bands is only about 340° of the 360° rotation, the dead spot being at the wipers 'parked' position. The purpose of this band is so that the wiper motor always receives power, even when switched off, when the wipers are anywhere but their parked position. For example, if you want a single wipe you just tap the stalk briefly. This provides power for <1s, which moves the wipers from their parked position then stops providing power. from there the motor keeps moving, drawing power through the non-continuous band, which powers the motor until the wipers are back in their parked position, at which point the connection hits the 'empty' section of the band and the motor stops, requiring an external signal to get it started again.

This shown in a Bosch wiper motor, not from a 944:

You can see that the left most connection on the casing contacts the ring with the dead spot.

Your symptoms sound like a bad connection on that slider to me.

My money is on Gryphon getting this right. I had the same problem on my 924 and stripping down the motor & cleaning it fixed the issue alongside no high speed wiper.

Don't forget to clean all earth points as well, dirty earths cause havoc given half a chance.

Thank you gents, the motor is my next suspect given all the switch gear and feeds check out at the relay and steering column. Will add pics and write up of the dismantle and rebuild

Had some fun today in dismantling the heater fan/ air intake

First step is to remove the large nuts over the wiper arm hubs to then remove the plastic cover



My cover is in a right state!





Once off its clear this is the first time this has EVER been cleared of leaves and debris...





Next step is to remove the six 8mm bolts holding the fan unit to the car body



But even after this the base unit is well and truly sealed to the car

In the absence of being able to remove the heater I thought I'd check the motor first just to see how goosed it actually is. 12v on red and neg to each of the other connections and... Nothing a very slight click on red and brown but that's being generous...



So the bran box needs to come out to get the wiper mechanism out of the car so I took the top off to see if that will aid removal - some dozen or so Phillips screws and the top comes off (need to remove the vacuum valves that operate the record flaps to get this off)



Again, the leaf matter under there has been there so longs it's actually turned into compost!!



Two bolts hold the wiper mech in, one is the earth strap to the motor, the other is this hidden 10mm bolt under the central wiper hub





A bit of a fight to wrestle the central part of the mechanism past the bottom half of the fan housing but it eventually comes out



It is properly dirty under there but I can at least start on the motor refurb now and clean up the crap....

Had an hour spare this evening to start the clean up and strip the wiper motor...

But along the way I couldn't get the top off the motor housing there seemed to be a braided earth connection from the underside of the PCB inside the motor itself to the motor housing. There are two metal clips that go inside to underneath the bearing and I wondered if these should be removed to extract the motor?

Looking at my wiring, I reckon it could be a broken wire inside the insulation that could be my issue... So, does anyone know which of these six connections I could run 12v across to test the motor?

Yes I have a serious amount of cleaning to do once things have been fixed and are all working again

Late finish at the office tonight left no play time on this so it'll be looked at tomorrow. Have picked up a working motor from porrec for £30 so at least I have a plan B which may become plan A
