so, I'm trying to track down an occasional fumes smell on my car. Been playing around with the hatch seal. Raised it with a bit of thin cord to make it sit higher just as an experiment. It's quieter sop must need replacing. but it does look odd not having rubber on the "underside " of the hatch.

Is there a seal missing or is it rubber on the car body only and metal around the hatch?

While I was at it, i decided to check out the seals on the rear lights. like a fool, i thought someone had bodged it up with gunk, only to read now, it was gunked up by porsche! I have some Neoprene sponge/rubber self-adhesive strip 10mm x 8mm x 5m from the bay of fleas coming to make a better job.

oh and the whippets can't keep out the car!

Nothing missing but you can adjust the hatch pins until it is a tight fit.
I did mine recently but put new pins in first

Thanks,
glad there's nothing missing. I adjusted the pins till the boot kept popping open then backed off until it was tight. I haven't replaced the pins (they look ok) but the rubbers around them are well worn...

That's the way to do it (as a certain Mr P once said)
maybe the pins are worn and will get a tighter seal with new ones

If you spray water around the hatch area, does any get in?

Another place to check for exhaust gases getting in, is the inner gear gaiter. These are prone to splitting and can cause exhaust/engine smells to get pulled into the cabin.

Thanks all. I did the gator gear thingy first. It helped a bit. The seal also helped a bit. Spraying with water sounds a good idea. The dogs btw. Make their own very different gasses :O
It's only really when the sun roof is open though, causing a a vacuum and the fumes to get sucked in.
