Took my 86 lux out for a blast round the country lanes tonight, took a roundabout a bit quicker than normal, and heard a knocking from the n/s rear wheel, sounds like a cv joint on a front wheel drive car, thing is, if the joint is worn that much, it must be really ducked, front wheel drive car joints only knock when the wheel is turning the car round a corner, unless I have a very special 944 with rear wheel steering then my wheels should be in a straight line. When the joints are worn, do they make the same sort of knocking noise a front wheel drive car makes, ?. I have a spare shaft, I bought it because there is a bit of play in the shaft when I grab it and give it a shake with the car on its wheels. . . any help would be really appreciated, don't want to change the shaft if I don't need to. . . . cheers Dave |

Dave you will need new bolts too. could be a wheel bearing? |

So, wheel bearing is also in the mix. . . bugger. Well I,m on holiday at the min, so it may have to wait until I,m back at work, trying to find the time to put an engine in my series land rover aswell, I,ll have to see how it goes. . . bugger again. . . Dave |

What do you think happens to the CV's when the car is listing to one side in a bend? The CV's do their work on the rear of a 944 the same as they would on the front of a Fiesta turning a corner. The rear wheel v's gearbox angle changes in the horizontal axis versus vertical on a FWD car My money is on at least one CV needed. There's four needed to do the job right. May as well check the wheel bearings whilst the shafts are off. |

Well I bought the shaft because of the play, there is also a slight vibration odd times, and with me feeling slight play, I thought I would start there. The noise only started lastnight, hasn't done it today at all. I work in a garage, so no what a shot cv joint sounds like, but a fiesta on full lock has a lot more wheel angle than a 944 rear wheel going round a corner ! I was just asking in case there could have been something 944,s do that other cars don't, I am finding lots of these silly faults out as time goes on, and I fix cars every day for a living, so I have seen most things and most problems, but the 944 keeps chucking new one,s in to the mix . . . . . I was warned it wouldn't be easy. . . . cheers Dave |

Hi there, this might sound silly..and I bet you have already checked..but are all the wheel nuts torqued up? I had a strange sound from the rear of my S at one point, and I was convinced it was a bearing or CV, turns out the wheel nuts had not been tightened enough from the last time I was working on the brakes. Anyway, just a thought.

First thing I checked, did it at the side of the road, DID get a bit on them but the noise was still there, but like I said, no noise last night. Think its time I got my series 3 landy out, then I can tinker with the 944 at my will. . . . cheers Dave |

I had a similar knocking on my 944T. I changed the drive shafts rather than just CV joints as the cost was not a lot more. Euro Car Parts had a sale on at the time and I think £300 got me both sides. On the advice of someone else on here I bought the correct tool from Fraserparts for the bolts and both jet washed and scrubbed everything with a toothbrush to clear 28 years of crap before I started. Give the tool a knock with the hammer to make sure it is fully home before you apply torque. They are very tight! Offside was a doddle but near side more challenging due to restricted access caused by the exhaust. Took me a morning to do both sides. Kit came with grease and new bolts. Connect wheel end first as it was easier to line up all the holes. Knocking disappeared! |

Might be stating the bl**din obvious , but have you checked the CV bolts for tightness?Ask me how I know.................. Toby |
