So I thought my 944T brakes were good...

Post subject:  So I thought my 944T brakes were good...
As per the title, on the road and on short tracks they're very good with my current PFC/RS 4-2 pads, but I'm current on holiday at a certain track in the Eifel mountains and just a quarter of a lap in they're grumbling and vibrating like crazy :(

My car is a '86 Turbo so narrow offset with brake ducts, but am I right in assuming the only options to upgrade involve changing the offset due to raiding parts bin for rotors which are all for deeper hubs?

Tomorrow's laps will involve a lot of short shifting to help preserve the brakes...

I guess higher temperature pads (something like Mintex M1155s) are not an option? This will also be at the expense of initial (cold) braking as well.

I am sure you have checked this with the history of work you have done on cars but what brand are your discs and how worn are they? I guess pad fade is different to the brakes fading mind you! I remember on my old 205 we thought the discs looked great until we saw the dark side of the discs (inside). One of them had plenty of corrosion, explaining the poor braking on track! Lesson learned :).

P.S, it is good to see you own a 106 Rallye. The GTi and especially the Rallye 106s are superb cars, if you can fit into them!

Hi Chas,

I'm already running full race pads do they're not the issue, but I think changing the front rotors will help as they're quite old. They were a bit rusty on the inside but I removed them and dressed them so the braking surface appears good but there must be a few hot spots causing vibration. The rear discs are brand spanking pagids...

I'm going to try new front rotors and improve the ducting to see how that works before doing anything drastic! The brakes weren't so bad on my second day at the ring after a good dose of MTFU ;)

I'm away at the GP at the mo but I'll post up some pics of the Rallye when I'm back as it's a bit of a beaut; they're great cars! Unfortunately I think it may have to go though to free up some cash for the Pork as I'm thinking of hill climbing that next...

Rich - the answer is not to use your brakes so much... :D

I never thought the 'ring was very hard on brakes - can't remember, have you been there before? I would expect to use brakes much more on first few laps (first 5-10?)

Yes you're definitely right there Ed and they were much better on the second day after I got braver; this was my second visit to the ring but I've still not quite made it in to double figures on the lap count (not for real any way, many hours have been spent sessioning Forza though which helps).

I do have a bit of an issue though and it can only be the front rotors as everything else is new and the vibration is coming from the front, so I've come to the conclusion some hot spots are forming under sustained use which are expanding. There's certainly no loss of stopping performance from the PFC 08 compound pads, just a good dose of mechanical sympathy kicking in...

I bumped in to a German fella there who had literally just collected a nice late Turbo and drove it there with his two boys for a shakedown session (brave!!). Obviously being a late model it was m030 equipped but it was running standard kit and the rotors looked pretty old, but he had no issues with the brakes whatsoever but then again despite a 15yr break from lapping the Nordschliefe he had previously raced there a lot in the past so he was obviously much more confident and therefore quicker than me. He also did a lot more laps than me as I had to give my rotors a break between laps, so it shows that there's not a lot wrong with the stock set up on a stock car.

Just got home today from the tour and after covering 1300 miles in ten days I'm really pleased with the car, it was simply marvellous and importantly for future trips mrs Richair loved being in the car for so long :) I'll get a project post going soon with some pics and details of my progress with the car and of the trip.

I'd agree with this :).

However, an ex-racing friend of mine (from the Caterham 750 Club Series) seems to think that if you are not fading your brakes you are not trying hard enough... But I cannot say it has worked for me or the other owner of the 205!

It's easy to fade your brakes if you brake too much, or too early...

Hard braking points are only really on the middle section - Aremberg, Kallenhard, Wehrseifen, Breidscheid, then Bergwerk, Steilstrecke are high speed stops but not too slow corners.

Try cleaning up all the mating surfaces where the discs meet the hubs. Corrosion in there will cause brake shudder.

See my earlier posts, already been done extensively ;)

Yes it was the middle part of the lap Ed, but as I got faster and carried more speed into corners obviously it became less of an issue. I went from being overtaken by a local in a (admittedly well driven) mk2 focus on my second lap on the first day, to only being overtaken by more exotic stuff on day two and doing a lot of overtaking myself. I've still got a way to go there though before setting a time, but only a fool try's to lap that place quickly without learning it properly... And there's seeming always a few of those about there!!
