............... on account of me spraying the '44 in the garage. Apparently it 'stinks' in the house, FFS - they should have been in the garage..!! Now it's p1ssing down with Hurricane Bertha's tail end and every window and door in the house is open and the mother-in-law's moaning, the grandson's moaning and the wife isn't really very enamoured with me at all... Should I get back out there and put another coat on? G |

I have mine to do, is your garage attached? Mine is separated by a path so I am hoping it what not be to bad. What paint and supplier did you use if you don't mind me asking

Joking aside (without even going into safety considerations) 2 pack paint (I assume this is what you are using) stinks from quite a distance! Even with a garage with closed doors you can get a damn strong whiff from a way away from even a small door being opened from the garage where a car is being painted. Please tell me you are wearing a mask if painting with 2K... |

Please tell me you are wearing a mask if painting with 2K... I quite agree, the health hazards from this stuff means it is lethal. A mask just doesn't cut it, it needs a full romper suit & gloves. And if it is getting in the house & people are smelling it then it is even worse. |

Ahhhh .... well, now. So, I'm in an attached garage and the idiot builder who did the extension and garage enlargement failed to seal the garage void from the eaves of the house so whatever is in the garage will eventually percolate into the upper storey (we're in a chalet bungalow). It didn't help much that I left the adjoining door open too  ...The paint - well, it's not 2 pack cos I'm a proper scaredy-cat when it comes to dying from inhaled iso-cyanates. I've read/heard/interwebbed that canister type masks just aren't good enough and that you really do need to use only forced air ventilated masks if spraying 2K. My wife bought 100 surgical face masks when the bird flu panic (hers of course) struck so that's what I use. Oh, the paint - it's plain old celly cos it's accessible and quite forgiving if you get it wrong. My local paint supplier was a bit expensive on paint, so I went for an Ebay special from a firm called Clostermann. They do a deal on 5L paint and thinners and the lot cost me just over a ton - I've never sprayed 'large' before so I went for a few easy options, bought a cheap but excellent performing LVLP gravity fed gun and a 3 1/2 horse compressor that I'd just been looking for an excuse to buy. However, it's not just as simple as that is it... add some self etching primer, high build primer, and a big tub of filler was needed so I also needed to get some decent shaping and forming tools - flexible long-bed sanders are great! Several packs of wet and dry and panel wipe and tack cloths air line filters and pressure regs ...blah blah blah ... I was torn between going for the original finish - gloss black - or something different. I went different with a gunmetal grey satin finish for the body and the spoilers and bumpers in satin black, although the grey is more of a grey/green teal colour. I was toying with the idea of clearcoating the shoulder capping and boot moulding, but frankly now I can't be arsed and just want the paint on. My wife was delighted today when I told her I wasn't spraying but doing the roof instead. She wasn't too happy that I was doing it in the dining room though (the garage is full of sprayed panels after all...) Spraying is great fun - you can have endless joy sanding out the sags and runs you get first time round, but trust me, when you take the plunge and RTFI you can see where the mistakes originate and when you get it right, and the finish is nice and shiny with no dimples it feels bloody great! Ok I'll confess to making a complete cock-up of the front bumper - I'd originally wanted (and sprayed ) it in gloss black but - notwithstanding the sags and dimples and a couple of moths - the really shiny parts (I did get some right!) just didn't seen right for some reason. Hence the change to satin on the underparts which incidentally looks bloody great. I picked up a link to a guy called Kevin Tetz on YouChoob ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_9WQmicyJU ) and it was a veritable mine of good clear information on bodywork basics, well worth a watch if you're considering doing it yourself..
