I have a feeling I need to replace a rear wheel bearing on my 944S, and it looks like it will be a lot easier using something like the removal/installation tools you can buy.

However, they look easy enough to make.

To save me removing, measuring, then making something up - does anyone have one that could measure it up and tell me what the diameters of the discs used are so that I can make a tool up in adavance of the weekend - would save me a bit of time!!

Cheers :)

Would you be able to measure the od Rhett?

That would be a start!!

I need to confirm that it is a bearing problem, but if it is, do you want to sell your wheel bearing?

Not a problem if you want to keep it, as I'll pick one up from ECP otherwise - but thought I'd ask :)

Hi Andy,

The OD appears to be 80mm, the ID around 42mm.

Yes, the bearing was bought a while ago for an earlier car (that is no longer with us.. :( ), so if you need a bearing - this one is available.

Hope that helps.

Rhett :D

front wheel bearings are easy to check. Just take a long hard corner like a motorway sliproad . If the rumbling whining noise increases on a left bend its your drivers side bearing and on a right bend its your pass side worn .Noise increases with the heavier loading
Rear wheel bearings just jack the wheel and hold the tyre at 3am and 9pm and rock it back and forth briskly and hard . Any discernable movement means your bearing is worn.

Wheel bearings take 1/2 hour a side in a garage and they have all the presses and tools needed to make the job easy. I would tackle the fronts myself but I would recommend you get your local Porsche garage do the rears ,they can be absolute pigs to do diy
