I'm looking to fit a set of stone chip guards (clear vinyl type) following some paintwork to my 944 lux. I should have photographed the old ones first  but didn't! I found this image online and a few half decent images of 944s with the chip guards but its not exactly precise. Would anyone be kind enough to post up some pics of their chip guards for my reference, i.e. with panel edges within shot for reference?

Thanks!

I have to do this too after the rye spray. I've been advised to see one of those vinyl sign men who should be able to do it.

Hi John,

A friend is an 'automotive applied graphics specialist' (sticks stuff on cars  ) so I'm taking it to him and will post up pics once done. There are two good pics of the area to stick them to in a thread above this titled 'black stone chip guards'.

After a respray theres no way I'd do this myself (have visions of me trying to peel off wrinkled vinyl from perfect paint :( ) so I'm leaving it to the professionals.

Will let you know how it goes

Toby

I'm also having some paintwork done in that area and it makes sense to replace the stone chip guards at the same time as they're cracked in places. Are they pre-coloured or are they clear, so that you just see the colour of the paint underneath?

Cheers,
Bryan

Having just taken mine off I can confirm they are clear.

Having had mine fitted I came back to the car to find that the supposed clear vinyls from Porsche OPC Hatfield were in fact cloudy! Not only that but the set comprised of three different types of vinyl and they had been cut out with a combination of form cut and kiss cut (essentially giving two very different edges). Not really the attention to detail I'd come to expect from Porsche. The fitter did a great job but it was only after fitting one side did the inconsistencies make themselves known. It looks like I'm going to have to get these remade and refitted as they're pretty awful. The only silver lining is that I've scanned the shapes and can now have these produced for £40 instead of the £100 Porsche charged me. Really disappointed in Porsche.

I've emailed Porsche so it will be interesting to see what they come back with.

If you're saying that you can make them better and cheaper than Porsche, I'd happily buy a set from you.

Cheers,
Bryan

Hi Bryan,

Yes. It wouldn't be difficult to better the quality of what Porsche supplied me for a much cheaper price. Are you in a mad rush for them? I'll be making a set for myself this week and want to be sure the final cut shapes are exact to the porsche supplied vinyls and to finalise the best thickness of material (thick enough to protect the paint effectively but not so thick that the material doesn't follow the contours of the bodywork well or leave a huge edge). Once I'm happy I can send you a sample of the material so you can see exactly what you're getting first and then create a set for you.

Thanks for coming back to me. I've decided to take Paddy's advice and order them from Porsche Decals Shop.

Cheers,
Bryan

I'll have a look myself! Might save me some work.

Thanks for the link Paddy.

So Porsche responded to my email and asked me to drop in with the car today which I did. Within seconds of viewing the car Katie Williams of OPC Hatfield calmly lifted off the additional layer of protective film that the older, original stone guard sets have. I've never felt so embarrassed/stupid…

The protective film was the source of the cloudiness, rough edges and inconsistent thickness.

Sorry Porsche.

I'm off to spec savers...

I'm sure I've made some sort of Top-Ten-Customer-Cock-Ups-List

But as you say, a good result.
