Tricky little buggers to get back together, aren't they?

Yes!

When I did my ones (4 way) I couldn't get them back together. I tried grease and glue to hold the balls in place but wasn't successful. In the end I dispensed with the balls and replaced them with plastic map pins with the pointed end cut down to size and held them in place with a blob of blue tac inside each spring. That was about 3 years ago and they still work.

Bit of grease worked for me!

Yup - I took mine apart completely, even the gimbally little bit in the middle and found that somewhere along the line two of the balls had been replaced with small screws in the springs...

I went down to my local bike shop and picked up a pack of 20x1/8 steel balls for £1.50. Will go for re-reassembly this afternoon.. Hopefully full function will be restored.

Just out of interest, what is the front button's other function?? On mine the rear button works ok with seat back tilt and seat base vertical, the front button however only moves the seat forward (hence the repair disassembly to restore backwards adjustment) so what's the up/down bit doing?

I found on my 8 way drivers seat on the 968 the front switch up/down arrows didn't do didley sqwat, until I discovered a detached wire, once I had removed the seat completely. I now have full 8 way adjustment, front of seat up/down, rear of seat up/down, seat forward, seat back, and dear rear panel tilt forward/back. I thought it was switch fail, but just a disconnect wire to the front lift motor.
