Great.

Took a trip to Wetherby and back on Saturday and when I got home, it decided to split a hose (rad to water pump) and squirt coolant all over the place.

Very odd I thought. The only thing I can think of is the fans weren't working when I got back into town & slow moving traffic. So, I bridged the fan feed and got nothing with or without the ignition turned on.

Thoughts?

The hose could have also split due to it being old. On my last S2 it was about the only non original hose left on the car until I changed all of them (most of them were swollen, and were at risk of breaking apart).

The fact that your fans did not work with the ignition on however is quite worrying. This as you know could either be down to a wiring fault (break in the wire, iffy earth or tarnished terminals) or a duff relay. The former can be tricky to trace, the latter can be pricey to replace unless you acquire a working secondhand item.

Fan relays are expensive?

New ones are, yes. If I were you I would also be tempted to check the simple things like the fan fuses. Of course if they have blown you may need to keep an eye on things to see why they blew (of course they could have blown for a simple reason (something got caught in the fans) or something more sinister

Both fan fuses were fine when I checked.

Just been to the garage... they've replaced the rad hose and were running it up to temp to check it when it started smoking. Oil onto the exhaust. Awesome.

Looks like head gasket or oil cooler has gone. There's evidence of oil being in the coolant for quite some time (not a new occurrence) as the coolant hoses were spongy and evidence of oil in the reservoir.

It might have something to do with a high speed / high rev section of driving I did yesterday that aggravated an existing problem... who knows.

Either way, I'm not a happy chappy. :(

Both Porsches are down at the moment. Going off them very quickly! lol

What's wrong with the S2?

Bad news with the 968. Hopefully it is the oil cooler seals out of the two scenarios. :).

Pauly has a fair point though! A 3.0 Turbo would be a pretty awesome thing to create. Go big or go home  .

fan relay new £175,

I got one for a 968 if you want to borrow for testing your fans.

the relays are known to go a bit funny, if one fan motor is dead the other will run at full speed if both are working they run at half speed, all controlled by the relay and the resistor block up above the throttle pedal.

you can test both fans with a power probe

Kangaroo juice.

It won't run smoothly. Runs fine when you're accelerating, but it's a pig to keep at a constant speed, especially round town at low speed. Replacement Throttle Body and AFM getting fitted today to see if that cures it. We did a smoke test and cured all the air leaks... so if this doesn't work I don't know what I'm going to do with it. The chap that has bought it is being very patient with me getting it fixed, so my hat is off to him. It's a fantastic car, just this running problem is letting it down at the moment. Hopefully it'll get fixed today.

I'm seriously thinking about selling the 968 once it's fixed and going back to having a Mk2 Golf GTi as a toy instead! At least they're reliable. :(

Hall sender?

I've replaced the cam position sensor with new, if that's what you mean?

that's what I meant yes.

the dam expensive little sensor you can get off ebay for 13 quid.

I know you mentioned kangaroo stylie, a bit more descriptive narration would be helpful

mine still does it some times and only slightly on gentle acceleration, floor it its fine.

I still have not got to the bottom of it.

and I have changed everything fuel and spark wise

the only thing that seems to make a difference is when the tank is almost empty, if I chuck in a bottle of injector cleaner it runs totally fine.
and no I don't know why

Okay... to describe the S2's problem in more detail:

- start it up from cold and it's hunting at idle. Also does this when warm.

- set off and it bogs down until it picks up again and accelerates away

- driving round town at a constant speed it's "kangarooing" - a blip of the throttle clears it for a few seconds, then it returns

All help appreciated!

Cheers,

Giles
