Some help or advice please as my car wont start.

The Story is as follows

Just come back from a good Run into Europe 1100 miles over a long weekend without any issues, on the last day going back to the ferry the car sort of stalled, it was on the motor way when I was passing a car I put my foot down a little in 5th and it momentary lost power and then returned, the car following me said that a big belch of black smoke came out the exhaust and then all was fine, I stopped the car about 20 miles later for 40 minutes, went back and it started fine but I could hear the electric fuel pump (it sounded like it was on its way out) struggling to pump, it ran all the way back to the ferry 120 miles no problem at all 70/80 most of the way, I checked in drove through to customs, turned the engine off for 20 minutes waiting for customs to open, when I went to restart it, it just wouldn't fire up.
Got the RAC out once back in Hull (after embarrassingly being towed on and off the ferry)
The RAC man got it running by removing the fuse for the fuel pump but it was running very badly and was very difficult to start and wouldn’t rev with the fuel pump fuse out, when you put the fuse back in it cut out.
Towed home, I've replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter thinking that was the culprit but it still won’t start, any advice or hints please
Spark is fine
Plenty of fuel
Fuse is fine

Could it be the DME relay?

In Belgium before it let me down

if it ran with the fuel pump fuse removed this would suggest too much fuel, sounds like a failed fuel pressure regulator.

As per Clarkes Garage, to check FPR pull one injector plug and see if the car runs on remaining 3 cylinders.
