Looking for some input. Just got my car running after a year of on and off working on it. I fitted new belts to it myself. Now I can hear a whine from the front of the engine. I bought the car as a non-runner and don't have exposure here to another running 944 so I have no baseline. I assume they all whine a bit due to the belts right out front but is mine too loud. If so is it likely to be a belt too tight or a bearing making noise in a pulley? ( I didn't change any idlers as I thought they were all OK.

Hopefully the sound will be ok here.

the old boy at east London Porsche told me if it sings loudly its to tight, if its quiet its too loose, it should sing just gently like a bit of alternator whine.

I'd agree with that. New ones are quite load & take a few 1000miles to quieten down though.

The balance belt idler near the bottom has a sweet spot too, if it's not right it'll whine.

Oops - epic fail as the kids would say on the you tube video upload. My first you tube video!
It is public view now.
I was considering doing nothing until there was a few miles on the belts just to see if they wouldvquiten down, but just wanted to be sure first.

Not too bad, put some miles on it, check it doesn't get worse. After 1500miles or so they'll need tension checked & adjusted. It'll still whine after but not as loud.
Edited to say, I assume ALL the idlers & tensioners were checked whilst the belts were being changed. Also was the water pump OK.

Thanks folks
Idlers were checked and seemed OK. No play anyway.
Water pump was not changed - it seemed OK and wasn't teh first day pump so am hoping it is recent enough. Ideally yes I would have changed it but I was buying so many parts last year when I was collecting bits for the rebuild that it felt like I was heamorrhaging cash! and the water pumps are not cheap. Hopefully that wasn't a false economy.....
