I've heard that swapping the DME and AFM for later versions improves the driveability and enables them to be chipped for a little extra power. Can anyone confirm this as I have both items from an '87 2.5 available to me.

Im also interested in this. Please let me know your findings. Ill have a google about see what I can find out.

Found this statement from a guy who had swapped the DME and AFM.

"Adding the new brain made a very noticeable difference in terms of driveablilty, idle and mid-range punch. Easily, the best mod I have made to the car. Not to mention the elimination of "the early studder" as some call itIn some people's mind, the early computer is not up to the task. It must be accompanied by a 85.5 - 88 AFM to work appropriately. It is direct plug n' play. Also, it gives you many more re-chip options (direct swap instead of soldering). As far as the chip goes, I got a noticeable increase in RPM. Without dyno(ing), the rest is really to hard to tell by feel. "

Edit: Any recommendations for somone who might re-map a 944 on a dyno. Im in the west midlands. Is it worth doing this over buying a generic chip?

Think your wasting your time chipping without the dyno. It's a shot in the dark. Maximum gain is 5hp. (You can also lose 5hp) You can't really feel that by the seat of the pants if your cars putting out what it should. My car has an early engine & cam. Later DME. Maps all to hell. Sets off real well though!

What kind of gains can you get chipping it on the dyno? Does the early car have a different cam to the later models? I heard the 944 has a rlly small overlap 3 degrees or so?



You mean you fitted a late DME chipped it without a dyno and the maps turned out too suck for your engine?

Nope. Look at my sig. Jaz fitted an early engine to a late car. Map is wrong for it. Without a remap you can only get it so close with the mixture. Have a massive flat spot at 2100 rpm. Then it goes Chip just makes it worse. Need a full remap. Have been promiced 5hp for a remap. But I have a custom fuel system & danske exhaust. Shouldn't effect it that much though map wise.

Just bought the afm & dme.
My car is running rich at 5.4% so we'll see if there is any improvement.
It also seems flat around 3500rpm and a bit jerky under 2000rpm.

Good luck with the switchover. Im going to steal the DME and AFM from my dads later 944 after ive put my engine back together.
