Post subject:  suspension confusion

hello ! Ive got an s2 1991 I need new front struts ,at the top of the strut it says 'f271'

what suspension have I got ,and what can I fit as my strut is knackered and making the wheel wobble

Ive looked on design911 and porscheshop and find the items that fit a bit contradicting

For a start you need to find out which options it was fitted with from the factory. M474 was a sports shock absorber option.
Having done a suspension refurb a few years ago any standard replacements will be a vast improvement on what you have. Do not forget the geometry will have to be rechecked after all this & this will make an improvement in itself.
When we did Paul's we used standard Sachs or Boge replacements from Berlyn, that plus a geo check mean it went from a white knuckled at 55 mph to hands off at >70 cough!

If you wish to track it then there are better options but personally not sure you'll see a vast improvement from a standard replacement for general road stuff.

I am after just a factory type ride no track days for me ,just car shows and touring

I do love a good b road but anything fancy would be a waste and probably give an anouying ride

rears should be Sachs 105 754

the fronts are sealed units and have to be replaced whole or an insert.

sachs fronts only seem to be available from OPC at £278 each

Be careful of the standard Fichtel and Sachs ones from the main dealers, there is a lot of old stock about both in the UK and Germany. We had a customer come to us last month with a 968 which had received new front shocks from the main dealers last year where both front shocks looked new still, but both had bad seals and play in the shafts.. They had a Porsche sticker with red lettering, meaning they were probably 10 to 15 years old before he had them installed.

Problem is, Porsche were not helpful about changing them under warranty as he had another specialist install them.. Probably another story there though, as usually Porsche GB are no quibble on parts for up to two years.

Similar costs are retrofitting koni inserts into the standard used casings, I can order these with differing valving, so in your case the soft setting could be set to standard. Koni can do this for you if you deal direct with them in holand.

I know the car and it's a bit sad from Porsche really.

but very interesting on the valves to get soft settings, can they do the rears the same as I would like my car to be as soft if not softer than standard.

yes I had experience of porsche parts I bought an engine mount and it look like it had been on the shelf since 944's were in production

I might look for some spare struts to do the engineering job of putting new inserts ,I believe its not as easy as most

I'm still looking at getting some new front struts

my car is an s2 dec 1991 it has a 26.8 arb

have I got sports suspension ,standard suspension (I know I haven't got m030) the top
of the strut says f271

they changed the struts so many times Ive priced them up at porsche and theyre 240quid each
but since theres so many strut options I might go for the koni inserts as at least these fit
all the later style struts once you done some engineering on it lol

think your kinda stuck with the koni / bilstien options and be about 20% stiffer

still cheaper than OPC

The PSX kit from Spax is an option but it says not for S2 which is odd as it fits the 968

Fitment lists are frequently full of errors as the people writing them aren't familiar with the cars. Empirical evidence always trumps.

F271 is what it says on the standard strut top mount. Don't think it's in any way relevant to the struts themselves.

yes your both right ,the biggest problem is the people I'm dealing with dont know anything about these cars and the 3 organisations ive looked at porscheshop and design911 seem to have different fitment lists for the same shocks and porsche they dont know what a 944 looks like never mind what shocks are correct ,I think if I go for an insert at least the shock body itself will fit but it means leaving my car on stands for a while while I engineer the new konis or whatever and I'd want them powdercoating to look like new

I had a similar issue last year with a 91 turbo. It had stock "sports" suspension not konis.

The only suppliers I could get with stock not on back order was Porsche GB and Berlyn all the others had to order them.

I paid £480 inc vat for the pair inc a bit of a discount.

Mine looked brand new and had no play or seal issues, they came from Germany as they were ordered and had delivery labels on them.

As much as you want to save money, I found the cheapest was def porsche.

I replaced my stock S2 inserts with Sport Konis and the stock rears as well. The front springs were replaced with lowered H&Rs at the same time. Tidy handling and the option to adjust both the front and back is a bonus, even for road use.
