Hi All

My driver side mirror has stopped moving left and right. Up and down still ok. Motor is still whirring away but I have noticed there is no resistance. The glass easily moves left and right by pushing it. Anybody had this issue before? Is it something just popped off maybe or more likely something broken?

Cheers in advance

Stuart

Could be either, I suggest you take the mirror glass off and have a look. There are a couple of small plastic parts that can easily unclip or even break if the mirror is handled roughly.

Took it apart by torch light! One of the little rods with teeth that connects the left/right motor to the circular frame has snapped. Another member who lives not too far away has a glass-less mirror (because I took the glass!) and has kindly said I can get the little rod I need. Will pick it up tomorrow.

Cheers

Stuart

The guts of that mirror all look very VW'y

May be worth checking MKIII or MKIV Golfs in scrap yards for repair bits

A whole mirror is cheap on evil-bay so might be worth buying one just for parts

Good find!

I wonder if the mirror glass is common on a VW to the 944, either in early 944 or later 944 format...

Well it was a good try but alas no use! Still only a tenner wasted, another £30 quid now on a full mirror from e-bay! Hopefully this one comes with a fully working motor!!

The vw unit looks the same from the front but is different at the back. It is a multi-plug fit whereas the Porsche item is soldered on. I thought I could adapt the wiring but could only get it to move up and down or left and right! Could not get it wired so both worked at same time. The vw unit shares an earth and the Porsche one has independent earths for the motors and after 2 hours of trying I gave up, which was just as well as it wouldn't bolt on either as it's a different thickness!

Fingers crossed my e-bay purchase is ok and I suppose I can at least cannibalise the control arms out the vw unit if they are broke on the complete mirror I bought as it seems to be these that give up over time. The motors and control arms are exact same on both.

Lol thought it would be perfect, felt like smashing it with a hammer after a few hours! It may well be adaptable, as I said motors and control arms are the same, screw holes same location, but round the back it all goes tits up! Throw in Porsche's super complicated mirror wiring and it becomes unfunny quickly!

Anyway at least I can take the control arms out and re-use them but even that is tricky as the unit is sealed. Ho hum. See what shape this other mirror turns up in, I need the loom off it anyway after chopping mine to bits trying to adapt it!!

Well I had another go at this today with a clear head after a complete 1988 mirror I ordered from ebay turned out to be series 1 mirror! Popped it back in post for a refund and then took my old mirror apart again and grabbed the vw part! The good news is my mirror is now back together working perfectly!

You have to take the back cover off the vw one (and bin it, no use to you) and also remove the 3 silver mounting screw collars you can see in the picture above. Replace these with the ones from the porsche unit. They are shorter! You then have to de-solder the multi-block connector that the vw unit uses. As I said earlier the vw multi-plug is 3 prong with a shared earth. Trying to make this work will make your car go on fire! I nearly did this, avoid! Once you have de-soldered the connector you are left with the 4 terminals, 2 per motor, same as your porsche unit. De-solder your mirror loom from your broken porsche unit, solder onto your modified vw unit and you can then refit, when refitting use the back cover off the old porsche unit and all should be good!
