Hi Folks -

The Porsche 944, including many other Porsche models, share the same gearbox filler/drain plug. It is also common to many VW Golfs and Audis. However, the normal 17mm allen key or socket would appear to be the incorrect tool for the job. Although a 17mm does work, the damage incurred on trying to remove the notoriously tight bolts is apparent (see pic below of mine).

Without rambling on too much, I found this specific VW tool whilst 'webbing' around today, which would appear to align with the internal convex contour pattern of the bolts: ie it is not a straight edge like a common 17mm allen and hence a more appropriate for the job...

The make and part number is: Wilmar W80681

Hope that helps anybody attempting the gearbox oil change - now a 20,000ml mile recommend service on any 944...

Strangely the drain and fill plugs on my 86 don't have the rounded faces and neither did the replacements I purchased from my local OPC. A 17mm socket fitted old and new perfectly. Maybe they changed for the S2. None of mine had magnets fitted either.

Thanks Matt -

My two bolts are stuffed and after my visit today to my OPC, the parts man said that they are a 'throw away' item ie once used etc.

I have ordered a new set from my OPC - so lets see what they bring...

Not long did my box oil and the plugs came out fine with a 17mm allen socket, and I don't remember them being unusual. The new ones didn't look anything special either!
