Panicking a little here....


I brimmed my car on thursday night and parked it up, my girlfriend said she could smell fuel so I've been for a look.

I've removed the offside rear wheel and can see fuel pipe has corroded where it is clamped to the body behind the rear shock just nr the unions to the flexipipes.

As the fuel is constantly dripping out I need to drain the fuel, what is the best way to do this?

As for repairing it I'll think about that once I've made it safe

Horrible problem and I have had this myself. I drained the tank by pulling off the pipe at the tank. I didn't have much fuel in it, but you are in a different position. Could try calling AA or RAC, must have this all the time with mis-fueling.

Always difficult to give advice in a situation like this, but here is what I would do.

Remove the cover plate under the tank that holds the fuel pump.
Tape the jaws of a pair of locking pliers (to prevent the jaws damaging the rubber), or use a pipe clamp if you have one.
Clamp the rubber hose that feeds the fuel pump from the tank (clamp it near the tank end).
Detach the hose end from the pump and put into a suitable (large) container.
Carefully unclamp the hose to release the fuel into the container.
Clamp whenever you need to change/empty the container, etc.

Use gloves, goggles, etc. Be very aware of what you are handling!

If in any doubt, leave it to a professional..as advised above.

Follow the white plastic tube to just before the rear axle on the floor pan

It goes into a white push connector - push the grey ring into the connector and pull the white plastic tube out (like disconnecting an airline)

Disconnect the battery then remove the fuel pump cover and introduce 12v to the live feed to the fuel pump

This will now empty the tank - obviously have containers ready to hold the fuel !

Hi RS....I'm afraid I don't recognise those connectors on a standard 944, have you got a bigger picture to show where they are located on your car? Ta...

They kinda look non-standard as push-fit connectors like that aren't usually used in high pressure petrol systems...I'm intrigued...

There are connectors on PET but mine may well have been replaced/changed at some time in my cars history for a different type

Hi RS..those connectors shown in the PET are metal screw fit high-pressure fittings. It looks like your original hard lines have been replaced by nylon/plastic and push fit hydraulic connectors used. Considering the pressure the fuel system runs at I am uncertain as to whether they are a good choice for that application. No real problems on the return feed, but after the pump running to the engine I am unsure...??

Most if not all Petrol injection systems run at apprx 3 bar = 45 psi

A similar type of connector as the ones used on my car are rated to 16 bar

Just checked Vehicles History file and it appears fuel line replaced by Tom Ferguson Porsche Specialists in 2010 along with the connector

A 16Bar rating seems like a pretty good overhead. I had never considered using those types of connectors when I researched the replacement of the hard lines on my car...they are darn convenient though...

Make sure you buy "petrol proof" ones though

Those definitely look like John Guest plumbing fittings.
If they are i would replace them because they go brittle with age just with water going through them.

They look like microbore plumbing fittings to me too!!!

I will take a closer look at the connectors and if any doubt I will change em

Find it strange that a Porsche "Specialist" would use connectors unsuitable therefore leaving themselves liable in the event of a fuel leak due to their negligence ?

Does anyone know if Tom Ferguson is still trading as may give them a call to see exactly what connectors they use / used ?
