Hi everyone,

I have read that there is a battery charging point under the bonnet somewhere. is this a myth as I cannot find one anywhere ?

On my 1992 S2 it is just under the windscreen in the engine bay on the bulkhead on the drivers side

There is a blue plastic screw cap to remove first

You should see it between the bulkhead with the rubber seal, and the windscreen on the drivers side with a blue cap on it, as already said.

If someone has not put the blue plastic cap back on it, you are looking for a brass hexagonal thing that looks like a very tall bolt head, about 10mm across with a wire going to it which is about 8mm across that comes through the bulkhead... under the brass hexagonal bit, it should be plastic to insulate it.

You definitely have one on an 89 car, as they have an electronically operated rear hatch mechanism and theres no other practical way to access a flat battery.

My 1988 Turbo has one which surprised me, as it has an old school key - pawl - catch mechanism.

I too had heard about this, but is it actually a 'battery charging point' or simply a convenient terminal to hook up a 12V power source (probably a battery) so you can operate the hatch mechanism and then get your flat battery out? I was always under the impression that it's not a good idea to recharge a battery while it is connected to the car's electrical system...However, what's the consensus of opinion here??..what does the official manual say? :)

More latter than former, but providing that you don't try to jump a car through it youll probably be alright.

Thanks Everyone... I found it (minus the blue cap)!

Battery is dead, so had to remove and charge at the house...

I can't recall seeing this on my 88 S which has electrically operated rear hatch. I had to climb in over the rear seats and pull the cable last time, this would be much easier.

You will usually only have one if you have an electro-mechanical hatch lock. If you have a conventional lock then you don't need one. It isn't all 944s, or all series two 944s that have it: it is a feature added to later series two cars which have an electro-mechanical hatch lock which wont operate and allow access to the battery when the battery is flat.

Are you confusing an electrical release in the cabin with a hatch lock which doesn't have a mechanical connection between the lock and the latches?

Late cars have a lock which operates a micro-switch. Earlier (most) 944s have a pawl on the end of the barrel which directly operates the latches. To the best of my knowledge/recollection, Ss do not have this.
