Typical. Problems only occur on long journeys!

I can't push the throttle pedal more than about half way before it cuts out. Sounds like a fuel problem. Any ideas much appreciated!

I'd start by looking at Leads, Cap, Rotor Arm and Plugs as they possibly breaking down when hot and under load

Unless you mean when driving your Vauxhall Combo Diesel van of course !

Maybe the AFM, but could be anything. I had a similar issue with an AFM fault. Car started to splutter and die, would idle ok, but died when throttle opened. Turned out to be a poor connection to the AFM. Taking the multi plug off and spraying in some WD40 always provided a temporary cure which lasted exactly as long as a piece of string! Always got me home though. Eventually I lobbed the AFM over a hedge and installed a MAF. Never had problem again!

My 924 had a tank full of old sh1te and degraded baffling foam which was clogging the primary fuel pump - similar symptoms, very spluttery and driveable on only a whisper of throttle on account of the miniscule amount of fuel getting through the pump...!

I replaced the fuel filter recently last year.
I don't see how it could be spark related, as the problem is extremely predictable at a certain throttle position.
No, it's not my van! Apart from the rust, and cheap plastic bits, that engine is indestructible.
It's not even the 924. Even that runs better, with none of the typical cold / hot start gremlins.
I will check for anything obvious and mechanical before I limp back home today.

How do I test the fuel pump etc?

Problem has mysteriously disappeared today. Before I set off this morning, I removed and re-inserted the injector and AFM plugs a few times just to clean the terminals and make sure they were properly seated. I still don't know if that solved it, or just chance, or what happened in the first place!

AFM! I would wager a small fortune on it now you say it's intermittent! Been there!

You say you replaced the fuel filter but did you check the screen inside the tank? I pulled mine out while it was low on fuel and there was an incredible amount of crud in there, the fuel came out pretty much brown! I think most of that was rust forming inside the tank from where it had been unused for so many years but still it's worth checking even if it is just to rule it out.

This is what the screen looked like after a clean up

And this is what came out

Interesting, thanks Rob. But where does that bit come from? I can't quite imagine it!

It sits in the bottom of the fuel tank, hose comes from that straight into the petrol pump.

So it's the outlet hose? Do I just need to remove that hose and possibly the filter bracket?

Just remove the outlet hose from the tank and prepare to catch a lot of fuel!

You'll see a hex on the screen housing at the bottom of the fuel tank for unscrewing it.
