I've been tackling changing the tensioner slippers on my S2 and asked a few technical questions on this thread viewtopic.php?f=25&t=16357

I've got to the stage where I'm ready to refit the cover, but it's a bit of a mess. See pictures.





I'm not too bothered about the upper surface as that's cosmetic. However, the underside is flaking badly. Do people agree that this could be bad news if bits drop off and got into the oil channels? I'm thinking of getting an alloy wheel company to strip it right back to the bare metal, which I assume is aluminium?

I know what you are talking about..I simply scrapped off the loose stuff, rubbed down what I could and sprayed some HT enamel over the bad patches. I haven't taken the cover off to see how it is doing, but I would hope it is OK. I don't think the material is straightforward aluminium. If you have a look at this thread, they are suggesting it might be magnesium?

I always thought that it reminded me of the metal that they used to make 'Dinky' and 'Corgi' die cast models from, and that was a Zinc based alloy.

This was a really bad condition cover from a fire damaged car, i had it sand blasted and stove enamelled for £40

Where did you get this done? Went to my local alloy wheel place who had previously done a very good job on a wheel refurb, but they weren't sure about the best way to tackle it. Better that than they said they'd do the job and made a hash of it.

I used a powder coaters in Bedford called Fusion Powder coatings, but there should be a similar place in your area, also if you have the cover vapour or glass blasted you will get a much better finish than sand blasting.
