Hatch release motor arm snapped

Post subject:  Hatch release motor arm snapped
So my hatch wouldn't open and after pulling everything apart I realised that the latch on the release motor that connects to the cable has snapped clean off! is this just wear and tear or has something on the mechanism been set too tight in the past causing premature failure?

Also can I replace this arm on its own or does it not separate from the motor? Doesn't seem to come off.

Worth giving your OPC a call for that to see if it's still available, it's listed in PET as a seperate part number 944 624 814 00.

That's the one, thanks. Although at £40 odd it seems a bit steep. Will try to find a good used one. Cheers

Difficult to find one used and not as broken as yours, I bought a complete motor and linkage when mine snapped and the linkage still managed to snap after a while so I made a replacement one from some steel plate I had in the garage.

We started prototyping up some billet aluminium ones a while back, because I think one of them is even more expensive than that.

From memory, there are three types and part numbers we identified, one of which was not available anymore, another was about £40 and another was about £80!!!

Not sure what the current price is, we made a couple of prototypes, which as far as I know are still on cars which come to us from time to time, so I guess they passed testing, just never got around to putting a price to them and making some more

Two years on, almost to the day, I need another one :shock:

I threw a ruck sack into the boot in a rush and the tassle from the bag landed directly in the hatch pin housing and I didn't notice. I closed the hatch, noticed the tassle hanging out, tried to open the hatch and it got jammed in the mechanism causing the release arm to snap! Unbelievable luck.

So does anyone have the arm or a motor with arm sitting around? I need the one from an S2, not the early type arm. Thanks

Hi, Have had one of these break before on a 2.7 944 and bought one from paragon. Ouch! So much money for something made from fragile cast alloy. When I had the same problem on my present S2 I decided to fabricate one from bits from the junk box. Luckily I found a small metal disc of the end of a stepper motor. I drilled out the centre and filed it to fit the spline end of the motor. I then added a screw just off centre to form the arm to attach the cable linkage. After some fine tuning with washers to give the linkage clearance it all works fine and cost nothing except a few hours work. 5 years later, still going strong!

If you are handy it is possible to repair a broken one with some aluminium plate and epoxy resin. Make sure you get the position of the rotating pin right both in terms of the distance from the centre of rotation and the height, and make sure you bake the part in the oven to set the epoxy nice and hard.

I repaired mine when it broke and I simply didn't have time to get a new one from an OPC. It's lasted about 5 years and (i hope) will last another 5 with ease.
