Post subject:  Suspension / Geo set up recommendations

Hi

Does anyone have any recommendations for a suspension, setup, geo expert ideally within 1.5 hrs drive of SW London? I have got the mechanicals all sorted, so now want to ensure everything works as it should on the handling side, with the intention of putting it under a little strain with a few track outings next year. Thanks, Russ.

I used these guys in Peterborough - http://www.f1autocentres.co.uk/

They have full laser set-up and was spot on, maybe there's one near you too?

Thanks Hairyarse, but not quite what I was looking for, and I probably haven't eleborated suitably above. I have a car that has sat for 3 years before I put it back on the road. I am looking for someone with experience who can do a thorough health check, test and inspect all bushes, dampers, struts, arb's ect and advise me what it and isn't in the correct order, and also advise on the best solution for anything that doesn't pass muster. I am angling towards someone with some current or past motorsport experience or a really good 944 handling specialist who has authority and knowledge on such matters - though I'm not looking for a track car. Hope that makes sense?

I want a really well set up car and prefer handling over power, so knowing the setup is spot on and as good as it can be for its purpose (fast road, the odd track day) gives me great amounts of comfort.

Bubble & Kick Racing in Essex would be near you and on those lines, if you search on here for that name there's a post from Terra who has used them.

Are they any good? They burst onto the forum knowing everything about everything but quickly fizzled out. They didnt appear to actually know as much as they thought, either.

I can recommend ProMax (Mine is setup by them and handles nicely) who are close to you :).

Mine handles well in the wet or dry and I have the full print out from Denmead tyres (10 miles north of Portsmouth) as they have a laser jobbie.
The tyres are wearing evenly too.

I don't think there's any "black art" in this - although some places refuse to touch the rear spring plates as they can be seized. If you have anyone local you trust then they should be able to give you an opinion on the roadworthiness of the suspension and set it to a reasonable geo for starters.

I have no experience of 944 specialists down south - is JMG too far for you? Promax are good but expensive and will give you a very nice handling road car.

A track geo is a bit different to road use, mainly because you want loads of front -ve camber (3 deg if you can get it) which isn't ideal on the road. You might find a compromise setting, but it will be compromise.

Obviously if it's well out a decent geo setup will make a positive difference, but really all the bushes etc need to be in good shape or the full benefit wont be achieved.

Thanks for the advice. The car steers true, has bilstein b6 coil overs so handles ok, I am just concerned about the state of the underneath (like rust on arb mounts) and bushes etc and the stresses a track day could have on them versus road use. Probably being over cautious, but they are old cars and I don't know this one that we'll yet. I'll give promax and jmg a call tomorrow if I get a minutes peace!!
