Im considering building my 944t shell into something awsome. Purely a track machine. There r a few options. Obviously stick with the std engine and go for big power. Possibly a 16v turbo engine. Or I started to think about a twin turbo v8 from a 928? Or ls series engine. Would much rather keep it all porsche.

So would the 928 v8 engine be suitable for turbocharging?

Has it been done before?

I think I remember jmg saying he has done some 928 turbos? Any info would be appriecated.

944 needs a lot of mods to fit the 928 lump in as it is enormous, like the inner wings removed. LSx is a better choice, peanuts (relatively) to buy & capable of more HP than the 928 for far less money. Will be more reliable & less effort for servicing etc.

What about a Cayenne turbo lump, good for 5oo+ bhp

Yes I know the ls engines are cheaper and more tuneable just thought it would be nice to keep it porsche. I have a customer who fits ls engines into all kinds of cars. His car is a mazda rx7 fd3s with a twin turbo ls engine with over 1000bhp at low boost !!

Will a cayenne turbo engine fit? Could be a nightmare to wire up??

Cayenne is a DOHC V8 so probably wider than a 928 lump so less likely to fit.

928 is a DOHC 32v as well

I was expecting that from Brett but yes. The thing is the the DOHC later 928 is quite a narrow head, the Cayenne is quite wide, but either way any form of OHC on a 90 Deg V8 makes the whole engine very wide.

One engine that would be worth looking at is the 3L V6 Duratec Ford out of the Jaguar S type. Designed by Porsche so sorta keeps it in the family, narrow angle & although only 240BHP in standard form in twin turbo Noble mode they are getting 500BHP plus. Lots of after market stuff for it & they are available for <£500. Also not such a torque monster that it smashes up the driveline.

all usefull info, there really are many awesome engines out there suitable for a transplant, but I would prefer to keep it a Porsche engine really. a 3 litre forged 16v turbo engine would be pretty awesome think. I just know a v8 is much easier to get the power from.

I was actually thinking of buying a noble, have driven a couple and they are awesome things. but I have started to think a from scratch build will be far more satisfying and I like to have something different and interesting.

the other thing, is I don't mind doing some major fabrication work to get an engine to fit, its what I do for a living so that's no issue. I have even thought about space framing the car! so I could do a front end spaceframe to fit an engine no worries.

Someone built a couple, or maybe one, hoping to start a series. The cost wouldve been terrible though because there was more fab than Porsche metalwork under the front wings and bonnet. Youd need every bit of your Gartrac experience to complete this, and a lot of spare time and money.

With regards to turbos: Ive seen a ridiculous 'Merkin setup where the turbo was at the back at the end of the exhaust. Inless you have it in the cabin and exit through the NS sill this is probably the only option. Theres certainly no room under the bonnet!

liking the look of that one, looks like they went semi spaceframe front to house the engine.
also liking the individual throttle injection bet that makes a noise!

certainly doable then, although turbos could be an issue to mount unless as mentioned a remote turbo setup is used

They did some 944 Porsche GTR V8 cars they had gorgeous workmanship and must be full spaceframed. In their photo gallery are some amazing pictures.

No sign of a macpherson strut on these examples either. Some very custom work there! I like them though.
