Post subject:  944 turbo front strut issues

Hey folks just picked up front struts for my car 91 turbo non m030 suspension.

the sachs parts numbers are 312 309 and 312 310 they look exactly the same as the old ones, however they are about 30mm+ shorter than the old ones both in length and position on the spring cup. I don't want to change the ride height for a lot of reasons.

the original part number for one is 951 343 032 12 (11 1500 100 816 VS 10)

can anyone shed any light on this, checked sachs part numbers and they are correct by the website!?

Got them from euro parts and the first ones they got in were standard ones, these are also wrong but at least have the dust shield brackets etc.

Someone gave me a spare set and they fit their code is 944 343 031 19 thry fit perfectly but are far too rusty not and need replaced.

Help!

ps posted this on the other forum but didn't get a huge amount of help sorry don't like cross posting!

What year is your turbo?

It might be that someone has needed shocks before for it, and fitted a complete assembly in used format from another car.

Porsche fitted several shock absorbers at the factory, especially in the last couple of years, where they used sometimes specific 944 turbo shocks, sometimes 944 S2 shocks and sometimes M030 shocks.

The ones that were on your car (confusingly with a 951 part number) were more commonly fitted to the 944S2 and 968 non MO30 cars.

The ones it seems that Euro have given you, are the turbo variant of these shock absorbers, which take a different spring.

My advice, ask Euro to cross reference the shocks with the 951 part number on your old ones and get them to swap them over for the right ones, which they may have labled on their system as being for the 944S2 1989 to 1991, then you should get the right ones for your car.

Thanks for the help, a bit beyond Euro car parts unfortunately, my local branch is very good but they were struggling with their system.

The OPC have now sorted it out via the vin number, the part number and item on the car are correct mine is one of the last turbos and by that point they must have been crossing over 968 and S2 parts.

Twice the price of Euro car parts but no the same item I guess, OPC coming in at approx £450 for the pair inc vat, but would rather it had the correct ones!!

Cheers

Any ideas what ECP have actually sold you then?

When I asked them to quote for some shocks for my '88 S they said they couldn't supply anything!

not sure looks like struts for an 86 earlier turbo. My local ecp has 2 braches one very good one terrible. They are worth calling a few branches some are better than others depending on knowledge and helpfulness levels.

I had a look at the online catalogue at sachs for your shocks hallsy and looks like they are discontinued which might have created the prob at ecp. There is def an alternative though.

try http://www.zf.com and got to online catalogue to check car details

This is a good site for crossreferencing part numbers using parts of exploded diagrams, American granted but i find it useful.

yours look like 944 343 03 117 and 217 respectively.

Design 911 sell them for about £110 sure you will find them elsewhere as well.

You may have the option of replacing only the strut insert if the strut insert retainer is not crimped but screwed on, they will cost about £70 each for replacement inserts.

Thanks for the tips strath :)

Mine are sealed units so would need modifying for inserts.

I did find the sachs part numbers once before, but as you say, it seems they were discontinued, although I imagine opc can still supply them, and pretty sure they would be sachs.

In the end I decided I would go with modifying for Koni sport inserts (larkspeed hqvw good prices) or trying the Bilstein B4 ones.

Will have to wait until the new year now!!

Have you ordered from Larkspeed? How tricky is the modification work?

Not yet, but I will do as soon as I can spare the cash!

From what I've seen of the Koni mod, is doesn't look too difficult, but I have the luxury of working in an engineering workshop, but even then, it looks totally DIYable to me.
