I changed my front shift recently as I had one from another car, I checked the pun size and shape for wear. One seem better then the other but only slightly . 9.70mm 9.80mm After clutch master fail, my gear selection become quite shift when going in to 3rd. I had a 9xx short shift fitted and 3rd still felt stiffer then the other gears. Once gear selected there was still side to side movement, so much in 5th that you could make it look like 3rd. Iv film before and after movement, and its tighten it up a lot. There's slight movement but I would suspect that momentum makes the shift less stiff from the off. What I did notice was the wear my recently changed shifter has taken. Much more over the last 6000 miles then the pervious 125k (25 in my owner ship ) so a minimum off 25k. Now maybe it's the short shifter that had caused the fast wear rate? I had to squash the spring washer slightly as I couldn't even see the recess for the circlip, let alone squeeze it on, so this has clearly tighten up the chance off play. In all it took me under 30mins to change it all over. I was sceptical 0.0 off mm would cause such play. Another mod iv read is to remove 25mm from gear leaver top no more. This makes the shift feel even shorter still. Not done that. As it is the shift feels more modern |

The rear short shift will have increased the load on the pin, but not that would cause it to wear at a massive rate. The problem with the original front gear levers from the factory is that the pin is made from a very soft mild steel with a tendancy to rust.. which is the key detail.. corrosion. Over time, a standard shift pin will corrode in humid, especially winter air.. This results in a thin layer of corrosion on the pin, which when you next move the lever, will be rubbed off.. Not only this, but the rubbed off dust will act as an abrasive, which then in turn causes more corrosion. This is why with the 9XX FrontShift the pin is made from a very high quality grade stainless steel, it will not rust.. Therefore you do not get the cycle of corrosion, erosion/wear. If you want to improve your shift even further you can eliminate the wear in the main shaft that goes form the lever to the rear shift, in particular where the pin goes through it. Get yourself some 10mm ID self lubricating bronze bushes, measure the OD of the bushes, and ream out the hole where the frontshift pin goes into this main rod, just enough to press the new bushes into place, and you will then have almost zero play in your gear selection. |
