Hi, I could really do with some help identifying a few components on the 2.5 S 16v engine wiring harness for my 16v swap please guys/gals!

Particularly the 1987 944 S as my engine and harness are essentially from that.

Under the dash near the ECU - on the loom going from the ECU into the engine bay there are a couple of connectors - one with two rows is a diagnostic connector but I have two other ones - could someone please take a look and take some pics for me under the dash so I can see what's going on?

I have this red one:

...and this single row connector:

THEN on the car (not on the ECU harness) I have these two little connectors behind the stereo/glovebox area:

(Hallsy has ID these as relating to the stereo)

Image

and this little one:

Image

Do you have anything connected to these?

and inside the engine bay I have a very long single black wire extending from engine harness near the brake booster area (RHD car) that has a single spade connector on the end - no one seems to know what the heck does here:

(Rhett has ID this as going to power steering pump)

Image

It would be incredible if someone could please help me positively ID these bits - thanks - some pictures from inside an actual car would be awesome!

Steve

I currently have part of my dash stripped on my 944S so hopefully can help.

It's dark out there at the moment, but I will take a look when I get home from work tomorrow afternoon if that's any good to you?

I've not forgotten!!

I had a quick look yesterday and took some pics, but I ran out of time to host them last night. I'll get them up today.

But quickly, the red connector I could not see, the black single row connector - that is connected (I have a photo to show whereabouts) but runs up with the main loom behind the dash so not sure what specifically, the two spades behind stereo cubby will be earth & +12v - look like the same connectors that mine has for stereo power connections, couldn't find the black twp pin one, and the one in engine bay, if it runs from the loom that exits bulkhead behind brake servo, then this runs along bulkhead, then down along fuel rail and then I lose it as it goes in somehwhere behind the plastic timing belt covers.

I have some photos so will get them uploaded this arvo. I'll try to find the other connectors.

Incidently the long wire is black with a yellow stripe - if that helps ID it.

Please could you also grab a pic of the wiring at the brake booster - I have a roundish white plug and a square beige plug that have nothing attached... can't find info anywhere on this either...

One thing that I think don't have is the "ignition switch unit" (pt. 928 602 706 01) - where is that item in the engine bay?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is the connector at the brake booster - what do you connected to this in your 944S?

Hi, I hope I can shed some light on the black and yellow cable. The 944S was a bit unique, as Porsche decided to put a switch in the power steering pump, so that when the wheel was turned full lock and the pump was under considerable load, the DME was signalled to increase the revs a bit to prevent the engine stalling. Originally, the cables to this switch were part of the engine wiring loom, but there was a design flaw...the feed was not fused. So, in some cases, if the switch went faulty, or the cable got damaged the wiring loom caught light  - This is not good! So, Porsche decided to do a recall and provide a new feed to the switch which was fused, this is the black and yellow cable that generally exits the passenger compartment through a small hole in the main DME rubber grommet, and runs down to the switch on the PS pump. Now, many owners have decided that this wiring is 'over-engineering' and simply disconnected it, or there has been a replacement PS pump from another model fitted (so no switch) rending this cable redundant.

Hope that helps!

Great thank you Rhett. So I can now ignore that one! Progress.

Any idea about the plug near the brake booster?

And that single row connector near the DME - what is that connected to in your cars?

I went out and had a look, your photo reminds me of the lead and plug from one of the knock sensors located underneath the intake manifold, it is difficult to work out as there is hardly any room to view 'stuff' there. When your engine went in did you plug all those sensors in?

If I get a chance I will have a better look later this week! :)

The16V engine cars had the 'ignition control module' (same part number) located on the nearside front inner wing, just underneath the radiator header tank and behind the nearside headlamp. On an 8V car you probably do not have the bracket that is required (might do though?). The module is fitted there, see photo:

Thank you so much for response! I feel like I may be moving forward at last.

No I don't have that bracket or module - it never came with my loom or engine. How is yours connected to the engine harness?

Yeah the sensors at the bell housing are both plugged in - well the one is connected to that strange black elongated thingy and the other is connected to the engine harness at the bell housing.

This creme plug doesn't have a long enough length to reach those two sensors or the engine block where everything is already connected. So it can't be there.

What about ABS? Would that be near the booster or maybe AC? If not the ignition control module - its on the correct side?

The single row connector could be several things as there are a few options that are accommodated in the wiring. If you could let us know what colour wires go to both the above plugs we could probably identify them easier?

My best bets at the moment are optional alarm system, cruise control, dash instrument feed, but I might be wrong on all points!

As before, the red single row on mine is connected in the passenger footwell and joins the loom that runs up behind the glove box. Without unpicking the loom I'm not sure, but could maybe work out with some wiring diagrams.

I'm not 100% but I've got a feeling I have a two pun connector close to the brake servo that is blanked off. I will have another look tomorrow.

Thank you guys - I appreciate it

I'll check the colour of the wires in the morning.

Ah, you are definitely going to need this component. When you say your wiring loom came from an S, which bits of it did?, as the wiring for that unit is integral to the loom that runs along the chassis rail and feeds the horns, etc. There is a moulded plug that plugs in, and it comes up from underneath the tray that is located behind the headlight. You will need to get that part of the loom as well. You can easily fabricate a bracket out of aluminium, or similar, and the module can be bought SH. Although, if you want a new one, do not pay Porsche prices as this unit is a standard component on Volvos, Audis and other cars (as the whole system is designed by Bosch!).

The mystery plug is not connected to the ignition module, the ABS pump is located under the offside wing and the electronics are under the dash, but there can be optional AC components located in the brake booster area, however, I have not seen any 'spare' plug like that one down there? I will have a closer look and see if it has been 'tucked away'!
