Last time I change my engine oil, I could have sworn that my magnetic sump plug didn't have a washer on it.

Should it have a washer? All the similar era VWs I've tinkered with certainly did have a brass washer...

I'm about to change it again so now is a good time to fit one if needed.

The plug looks like this:

I would expect something like this:

Or this one in situ (not my car)

Yes it should & they frequently weep if it isn't there or is old. New uns are pennies from an OPC.

Cheers Jim!

I knew something wasn't right. My VR6 Corrado had a captive aluminium washer but I was surprised to see it totally missing on the '44.

Just for convenience (so I can do the job tonight) I'm hoping the 944 uses the same one as a Mk2 Golf, as a I have a nice one of those kicking about already.

I see the part code is 900 123 049 30

We use a new aluminum one on each oil change, Porsche swapped to aluminium washers some time ago, so if you have a copper one, its probably quite old, or some Porsche dealer has a massive stockpile they are still selling! lol

Update for all of the keen washer watchers out there:

Being aluminium, I didn't notice that there actually *was* a washer in place but I had unwittingly reused the old one which was squished on to the plug. It was leaky... That's what happens when you change your oil in the dark

Nottingham Porsche kindly gave me a fresh one for gratis - I guess they couldn't be bothered to process a few pence of petty cash...

Win! 8)

PS: The VW brass one I had kicking about was too small
