Just some idle musing...My car is due its belts, so it is going in next week. I am also planning on upping the power from 220 to 270-80 at some point in the future. IIRC there is no evidence of any top end work on the car. Would it be wise to do the head gasket at the same time, or just leave it, as the car doesn't show any signs of it failing? Thoughts?! It is a 1986 turbo on 113k |

That is a question..you could always follow the old saying - if it ain't broke don't fix it. But, if you are considering a power increase in the near future, perhaps now would be a good time, I guess it depends on your time schedule here. However, when the power increase work starts you will want to remove the head for cleaning the chambers and valves, perhaps polishing inlets, etc...so it will have to come off then. Personally, I would wait until I had everything ready for the mods, then attack the head, etc. You can always slip the cam belt of the sprocket and reuse it if it has only done a few miles. Just my thoughts, I am sure others may have a similar or differing view.. ![]() |

That was my thinking, but I am a 944 virgin, so was sure how much work would be 'doubled up' doing the HG and the belts. Planning on more power in the spring. |

If you can do the work yourself. Then I guess it don't matter if your paying a shop, be cheaper in the long run to have it all done. In the mean time I would be getting worried about that head gastic. Do it now b4 you need 2 skim the head. Give the engine a longer life can only be skimmed a few times. |

Hi ![]() I saw your thread on PH and could not answer there (banned as usual lol) NO.... dont do the head gasket now.....you are asking for trouble if you do.... My head gaskets have lasted well over 160, 000 miles (even with my huge Nitrous system) and i have no intention of disturbing them...EVER.... As an ex race mechanic, my best advice is leave the HG well alone... All the best Brett ![]() |
