Just been to pick my S2 up from my local indy after belts re-tension, started it up and it sounds very tappity and I think a tiny bit lumpy.

Something isn't right so I've left it there, I've not had any rattly/tappy noises before. Is it just coincidence I've suddenly got a lazy tappet. No other work was carried out other than the re-tension and I leave the car 2 weeks at a time sometimes and it's always quiet on start up until now.

Could it be bearing rattle from the water pump because the tension is too much for an old pump?

For your sake I hope that a tappet has simply become lazy and that it will cure itself.

However, there is a chance that the water pump may have gone, or worse the belt has slipped resulting in some serious consequences.

Saying that, I have once or twice seen tappety engines being rescued by simply retiming them. It makes no sense whatsoever, but maybe pre detonation was occurring.

Pump rollers etc all replaced a few months ago along with the belts, this is just a re-tension after 1600 miles. Pump is OEM but I have heard of new pumps failing in a few months so won't rule that out.

Hopefully it's just a lazy lifter I'll know on Monday, I'll get the engine flushed while it's there if that's the case. If it's jumped a tooth it would have been when I started it up.

pump could have gone, "just a retention" it may have failed before the retention, but not shown its face until it was disturbed.

But lets hope it hasn't,
