Well it isnt my month, ive tried some after market parts because of budget restrictions and my eagerness to actually drive the car whilke the dry weather remains. why oh why it couldnt need this work when the roads are salty and i wouldnt care less if its on axel stands ill never know but...........

I finally traced a clonking noise ive got to NS inner CV joint because of the time mail order takes ect ect i went to my local motor factors to see what they could do. Well same day they got me one in stock for a few shilling over £40 and AMK which i believe to be reasonable brand. Set about fitting it this evening, only to discover the outer joint has decided that it has managed to wear out while sitting still all week.

Sod it best have the drive shaft off then! So 3 of the 6 bolts on the outer cv joint were stuck in and required and over sized key and some propane to shift them. The CV joints them selves came of of the shaft with little trouble, I cleaned and inspected everything ans sure enough I could feel play in both. I set about fitting the new one I had and to my surprise it has play on the splines! How on earth can it have play if the old ones were tight on?

I will be heading back to them in the morning with a box full of parts and drive shafts so they can sort it out.

Oh and design 911 still havent sorted out my track rods, does any one want some money? Im clearly a mug and just like to give it away!

Rant over :)

Hang on in there. It only took me six years to finally cure the 60mph front wheel shimmy on my car which involved replacing every moving part in the steering and suspension, oh and wheels and tyres.

I had a number of occasions when the incorrect parts were supplied despite supplying full details of the car  and always as I replaced each partake thought I'd got to the end of the job...yet another part would suddenly croak

Still, that first drive (and everyone since) when I had finally sorted the car was worth the pain. I now have the car I hoped ai'd bought all those years ago and it's superb.

good luck with yours.

Jon

Anyway im up nice and early to go speak to the motorfactors, lets see what they can supply me today. hopefully a nice solid driveshaft!

I will report back later, I hope it doesnt take me six year, I havent got that sort of money :(

Good luck, I'm sure you'll get that weekend drive. ....and six years...I did not expect that either but I must admit to being bullheaded and determined that the bloody car would not beat me! I'm glad I stuck with it :D

unfortunately the drive wont happen, they cant get more stock until Monday!

As I happened to be passing eurocarparts I thought id call in and see what they can do. £210 +vat for a drive shaft. That more expensive than OEM! I have seen Jons post about a complete shaft that's from the OEM supplier at £150+ vat when mark and Jamie are out of a meeting this morning I will be order one from them and get this pain over with.

Id like to sit and read some of my porches literature as I've may have just squired another 944.

At least it is getting sorted. When I stripped my drive shafts there was fractional play in one joint & the rest were OK, although one had what looked like sawdust in it! It was also well knackered. I stripped & cleaned & regreased the lot & suddenly the driveline was quieter. Quieter than it had ever been since I bought the car!

Don't forget you'll need new bolts!

Just waiting to hear back if they can still do them at the same price. fingers crossed.

Ive got new bolts are they are the same as beetle/camper/type 3 with IRS Im trying to find out if the drive shafts and CV joints are the same. They certain look identical to the naked eye. When I take the shaft off of my type 3 I will do a comparison as the type 3 parts as significantly cheaper

Brilliant to know I'm getting quality this time them, ive one set of new bolts. Jamie was going to let me know if the new shafts came with them or not. I assume they dont? OPC's arnt that much use to me as the nearest one is over an hour away unfortunately, but the bolts are easy to come by around here if I have to get a set :D

They don't come with them. Your OPC should be able to post them out to you

Ask if they will give TIPEC discount, if they won't give another OPC that will the business. Tonbridge & Exeter definitely do, I know some others do. A few don't Reading for instance.
