Newish member to this forum and would like some advise from those who have done this before me. I bought the 944s2 knowing that it was burning oil and I fancied taking a porsche engine to pieces ( please don't ask why). Anyway took the head off, except for a couple of sheared rocker cover bolts it was fairly straight forward they are now removed. Head is now all cleaned up, valve wear within tolerances and faces reground so everything on the head ready to be assembled. But the wear on number 3 bore I don't think I can ignore, so the piston has to come out so I can check it further. So this is where I need the advice, am I right in thinking that because of the front suspension cross member there isn't enough clearance to just drop the sump to get to the big ends and that as the engine mounts are attached to this crossmember I have to support the engine to remove/drop the said member and if I have to go that way I might just aswell remove the engine completely. Now I have read the engine removal procedure from the clarke garage web site and I do have a 944s2 workshop cd manual so what problems will I face that they don't cover and are there any shortcuts or tips which those of you who have already done this discovered. Thanx, any help to make this easier would be greatly appreciated. Sorry its such a long post. |

I've not done this yet but as I understand it the accepted method is drop it out the bottom & lift the body off of it. In theroy it can come out the top but it's reputedly Bl00dy tight & a lot needs to be removed. Mine will certainly get dropped out from underneath. If you have a bad bore it won't be good news, although oversize pistons are available they don't go up more than 0.5 & even those are expensive. Also the Alusil bores need the correct prep after rebore & most engineering shops don't know or can't do this. I understand PerfectBore can & also Mike at Boost Performance, EMC in Birmingham are the dogs dooobries for 944 engine prep as well. |

All would add is its a good time for a clutch change. I did an engine swap on a lux, I took it out the top without too much trouble. Getting the engine back in again was harder, I wouldn't do it that way again. I also cheaped out and didn't do the clutch and the rubber puck that looked ok started to fail 2000 miles later, mistake number 2! You can do a lot of work without pulling the engine but the cross member has to come off to remove the sump |

I'm just about to take the engine out of mine. From the advice I've been given its much easier to take the engine out of the bottom because if you take it out the top the crankshaft pulley fouls the bonnet catch. Also, you have to get the car up at least 21 inches, machinemart do a pair of six ton ratchet axle stands which will give the height you need plus the rachet action will make things a lot easier, there about 20 pounds. I've just invested in an engine hoist, whereabouts are you, if you're local you're more than welcome to borrow it. |

Thanx for the offer AndyG but have just bought a crane off ebay, will need it for a few other jobs. The 944 is already about 24" off the ground at the front and I believe you only need 21" to be able to pull the engine clear. Plan to lower it onto a sheet of board which I can then drag clear, the head is already off so will have to use a sling to lift / lower the engine as the other lifting hook was attached to the head. I'm off work for next 2weeks and plan to have the engine out in the next few days once I've collected my crane so I might be able to give you some tips. I'm in Basingstoke and hopefully during my time off will get organised to post some pix |
